What can be said about Suicide Squad that hasn’t already been said hundreds of times? The criticisms following the film’s release granted no favors for the Suicide Squad or DC in general. And now, even the film’s director expresses regret over decisions regarding the movie.
A fan of the movie tweeted David Ayer to thank him and give praise to the director. Ayer replied back to the tweet with thanks but also some disappointment regarding the final product. While happy about introducing new characters to the masses, Ayer is sad about the response from critics. He acknowledges that the film does have its share of flaws. Ayer said that it is easy to follow the same formula when making a movie for mass appeal. “But I went for it,” said Ayer. “And I know Squad has its flaws. Hell, the World knows it. Nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds.”
Regarding the choice for the main villain for the film, Ayer wishes he had a time machine. “I’d make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story. I have to take the good and the bad and learn from it.”
It is interesting why the choice was made to sideline one of DC’s most iconic villains. He also understands that he needed to take more time for character and story development. Despite the criticism that Suicide Squad received, it appears that David Ayer learned a few lessons from this and looks forward to working with DC again. While I have some dislikes about the film, I also think that sometimes risks have to be taken in order to move forward. I hope that DC has also learned some lessons from Suicide Squad and will use those lessons for future movies.
What do you think, geeks? What changes would you make to the film?
