To great fanfare and perhaps even greater scorn, DC Comics announced last week the much-rumored and long-awaited return to the “Watchmen” universe with “Before Watchmen,” a series of seven prequel titles, each focusing on one of the characters made famous more than 25 years ago by the masterful storytellers Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The announcement, trumpeted with great fanfare by an onslaught of PR interviews with many of the creators involved, was met with a combination of excitement, curiosity, disdain and scorn.
Much to the delight, surely, of the publisher and editors at DC, the online comic book community was atwitter, literally, with reactions great and small. Though to some, this writer included, the return to the world of the Nite Owl, Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan was greeted with the one sound DC, or any publisher, wouldn’t want to hear after such a huge announcement: the resounding silence of indifference.
More after the jump.
