Think Outside The App Store

Despite the fact that apps like Instagram and Draw Something have  been acquired by Facebook and Zynga for millions of dollars 59% of most apps don’t earn enough of a profit to break even. If you are an app developer and are hoping to be the next big thing that gets bought out by a bigger company you might first want to read a recent study conducted by App Promo. They found that in a market where there’s an app for everything more than half of mobile apps never make enough money to break even and only 12% make a profit of $50,000 or more. Many of these developers are working with a budget of at least $30,000 and about 14% of their time is used to focus on marketing.

There’s over a million apps across the many mobile platforms like smartphones and tablets. The challenge for developers has been getting their applications noticed and downloaded. Developers who advertise and market outside of the app stores have generally found the most success earning revenue for their app. Discovery is the key to a successful app and without a decent marketing budget and time put in promoting it developers may just find their app getting lost in the crowded app stores. App Promo’s research is based on data from a survey of over 100 app developers. Read more: Think Outside The App Store

Chrome for Android beta is now available.

Love Chrome for your home PCs but hate that it isn’t on your favorite Android powered device? Now you can rejoice because Google has the Chrome for Android beta up in the Android Market! Enjoy the PC to cell syncing of your open tabs and bookmarks. Play with an unlimited set of open tabs in stacks. Go Incognito on your device, just like at home. Zen Studios brings RPG love to Pinbal FX2!

Zen Studios is back at it again! Not only have they kept their Zen Pinball\Pinball FX2 fresh with new tables but now they’re bringing some RPG flavor with their next table with Epic Quest. Gamers pick up the sword of Max, a zealous knight thirsting for action and riches. Rescue a princess, slay some dirty monsters and amass a mountain of treasure, have fun. If for some absurd reason Max should die, worry not for all of his loot and experience come with him onto the next game!

Slated for download later this month, Epic Quest will be available for Zen Pinball on PS3, Apple App Store and Android Market plus Pinball FX2 for Xbox 360. New achievements and trophies will be added just like every new table plugged into the Matrix Zen Pinball. If you want a great fun time, I suggest you add this one to your library when it comes out! Hit the break to check out the press release from Zen and check out some screens of Epic Quest.

Time to go back to school, Android school!

Now I’m not talking the classic Rodney Dangerfield movie (haven’t watched it? Go stream it, I’ll wait), but instead another way for the Android community to give back. The recently announced Android Training was just launched by Android Developers to help budding devs get a better handle on app building. The lessons will help overcome those pesky battery issues, make navigation easier and many more problems associated with app crafting.

All told there’s 34 lessons spread out over 11 sections but they plan on adding even more coming soon. It’s great to see these folks offering their expertise, on the house none the less, instead of being secretive like certain other communities. Proud to rock an Android phone! Interested in dipping your toes in the water? Go here and get your app on!
