During Nintendo’s recent Direct conference the company announced a new addition to their handheld family- the 3DS XL. As the name suggests the handheld is an enlarged version of the normal 3DS with the upper screen at 4.88 inches, compared to the regular 3DS’ upper screen which is 3.53 inches. This is a 90% increase in size, making it the largest screen of any Nintendo handheld to date. To go with this increase in size the battery life has also been improved, increased to between 3 and 6.5 hours. The 3DS XL will be available in three colours blue,red and silver.

At the Direct conference a release date was also announced for the handheld- July 28th. To accompany the handheld’s release a number of titles have been revealed. The biggest title of those announced is Kingdom of Hearts 3D Dream Drop Distance, but Art Academy, Freaky Farms Deluxe and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy will also be released on the 28th. Theatrhythm is a cross between traditional Final Fantasy, although with a more cartoonish art style, and rhythm based gameplay. Furthermore a European release date for Super Mario Bros 2 was announced and that will be appearing on August 17th. Although there is yet to be any word on price it will certainly be announced soon given its looming release date.
