Comic Book Fix: Wondercon News and New Reviews
Last Updated on Wednesday, 21 March 2012 01:34 Written by david golbitz Wednesday, 21 March 2012 11:00
For the first time since it began Wondercon was held last weekend somewhere other than the Bay Area. Originally held in Oakland, Wondercon moved to San Francisco in 2003, but due to ongoing renovations at the Moscone Center, CCI, the convention’s organizers, moved Wondercon south to the supposedly warmer climate of sunny Anaheim. Convention guests and attendees braved the elements during an unseasonably fierce downpour on St. Patrick’s Day to fill the Anaheim Convention Center for what many consider to be one of the better convention experiences in recent memory, leading some to wonder whether the Bay Area has lost its signature convention for good.
But amidst the poor weather and devoted cosplayers, some interesting news was announced over the weekend. The return of a fan-favorite Marvel captain, though perhaps not the one you’re thinking of. And a longtime Vertigo writer is plunging into the deep end of Marvel’s mutant waters writing not one but two ongoing series. And a prominent voice and longtime advocate for creators to embrace digital comics is finally putting his money where his mouth is, selling his vast collection of comic books to help fund his new series of digital comics.
Read on for details on these stories and more, including my reviews of some of last week’s biggest releases, like Brian K. Vaughan’s latest creator-owned series, the spacefaring sci-fi epic, Saga.

Comic Book Fix: Image Comics Expo 2012 Roundup
Last Updated on Wednesday, 29 February 2012 07:58 Written by david golbitz Wednesday, 29 February 2012 11:00
Twenty years ago, seven plucky artists, at the time some of the biggest names in comics, said goodbye to the inherent stability of working for Marvel Comics, packed their bags and marched headlong into the great unknown: independent comics. But this was to be a far cry from most of the indie books of the day. No black & white, no self-reflection, no long, meandering tales about the meaning of life, the universe and everything. No, these indie books were looking to make a splash, to shake up the status quo of the industry. These books would be in full color and filled with action and adventure the likes of which had previously been seen only at Marvel and DC. This was indie publishing on a grand scale. And to much of the industry’s surprise, it worked. But not only did it work, it thrived. Sure, there have been ups and downs over the intervening years as the industry was rocked by the bursting of the speculator bubble in the mid-to-late ’90s and the rise of the Internet gave way to piracy and the digital revolution. But the company those seven artists created weathered the storms and has come out on top, 20 years later, as one of the last bastions of true creator-owned independent comic book publishing, a haven for creativity and collaboration rarely witnessed at the larger, corporate-owned publishers where protecting their IPs is more important than pushing the boundaries of storytelling.
Last weekend saw the culmination of that 20 year march as the first ever Image Comic Expo was held in Oakland, Calif. A celebration of the independent spirit, ICE commemorated the twentieth anniversary of the formation of Image Comics with a keynote address by publisher Eric Stephenson, who waxed nostalgic about the beginnings of the company and laid out his vision for its future, creator spotlight panels and signings, and oodles of new books announced, books, much like the Great Marvel Exodus of 20 years ago, written and drawn by some of the biggest names in the industry: Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, Frank Quitely, Brian Wood, Steve Niles, Tony Harris and a whole lot more.
While Marvel and DC, despite reboots, relaunches and Hollywood blockbusters, trot out the same old stories week after week, month after month and year after year, Image continues to pave the way to a future of new stories and new ideas. Unshackled by the creative constraints of the Big Two, creators are able to let loose and tell their tales however they see fit. And if the past 20 years is any indication, the future is very bright indeed.
Check out a rundown of some of the most exciting new comics announced at ICE after the jump.

Comic Book Fix: Reviews – A Time for Adventure, a Vampire Slayer and a Barbarian
Last Updated on Tuesday, 14 February 2012 06:45 Written by david golbitz Wednesday, 15 February 2012 11:00
The past week has seen some tragic and unfortunate stories in the comic book industry, from Marvel demanding $17,000 in damages from destitute “Ghost Rider” creator Gary Friedrich to artist Tony Moore suing creator Robert Kirkman over The Walking Dead royalties to the death of acclaimed western, horror and humor artist John Severin. Amidst all this turmoil, however, let’s try to remember why we care about any of this in the first place: comic books are awesome.
Yes, comics is a business, sometimes an ugly business and increasingly a business with a lot of money at stake, but that’s only because we, the fans, love the industry as much as we do. We all have our favorite creators, favorite characters, favorite companies, but at the end of the day, the medium itself is what brings us together. So feel free to take sides in one legal battle or the other. Support Alan Moore or support “Before Watchmen.” Just remember that we’re all in this together. We all support comics.
With that in mind, check out my reviews of a few comics that I support: Adventure Time, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Conan the Barbarian.
