Even The Avengers aren’t immune to lawsuits!

Time is counting down to the September 25th bonanza that is the Avenger’s on DVD and Blu-ray. The anticipation became a fervor when Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced the end all be all Collector’s Edition Blu-ray sets – the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One — Avengers Assembled edition. The high-powered box set includes 10 discs featuring every Marvel Universe movie that ties into, and includes, the Avengers. Besides the movies, there is also a ton of swag, choice piece being a replica of the Tesseract (Cosmic Cube) tucked inside a replica of the briefcase from said movies. That briefcase has ended up undoing the super sweet set.

It seems that Rimowa BhmbH, maker of fine German luggage, has delivered a Hulk sized punch in the form of a lawsuit over the planned use of the briefcase replica. According to Rimowa:

“Marvel did not obtain any license or authorization from Rimowa to make replica copies of the case for any purpose. … The plastic ‘replica case’ [is] a close copy of Rimowa’s Topas attaché case in every respect, but quality — from the proportions and coloring, to the style of the handle and latches, and, of course, in the use of the trademarked parallel ridges around the body of the case”

Certainly Disney\Marvel thought they could use a replica from their movie. It does seem right, doesn’t it?

Comic Book Fix: Marvel Teases Upcoming “NOW!” Titles

Marvel has chosen this week to unveil teaser images of a few of its upcoming “Marvel NOW!” relaunches. Why make these announcements the first week of August instead of, oh, say, during Comic-Con, who knows? I guess they thought they’d get more traction in a slow news cycle rather than deal with the deluge of material spewing forth from San Diego this year. Regardless, this is the week Marvel has chosen. And it must have worked, because here I am writing about it.

Anyone who has perused the latest Previews that was released last week might have noticed that a whole lot of Marvel titles are ending come October, which lines up with the “NOW!” relaunches. Ed Brubaker is leaving Captain America, Matt Fraction is leaving both Invincible Iron Man and The Mighty Thor, Jonathan Hickman is ending his Fantastic Four and FF books, and Jason Aaron is wrapping up his all-too-brief run on Incredible Hulk. Aside from the three previously announced “Marvel NOW!” titlesUncanny Avengers, New Avengers and All-New X-Men–what else does Marvel have coming down the pike? Well, now we know at least a couple more titles and their creative teams.

Read on for more.

Comic Book Fix: Yet Another Marvel ‘War’

While scanning my RSS feeds this afternoon I came across a blog post that caught my eye. In this Newsarama post written by Graeme McMillan, he points out the absurdity of yet another “war” within the Marvel Universe. Yes, coming hot on the heels of the aggressively advertised, creatively stagnant Avengers Vs. X-Men, comes yet another sure-to-be-overly-hyped Event from the supposed “House of Ideas.” And this time, it’s WAR.

Or, to be more exact, it’s another war. As McMillan says, this new war joins Secret WarCivil WarUltimate WarSilent War and countless other “wars” that have been perpetrated by Marvel over the last decade. These teaser images–Captain America’s blood-spattered shield; Wolverine’s burning hand; and Thor’s shattered hammer–could belong to any one of the previous “events” Marvel has thrown at us over the years.

Time to re-assemble, The Avengers sequel is official!

Let’s be honest geeks, we knew it was going to happen. The ending basically guaranteed it was coming but until it was officially announced, we had to dream. Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, was on a conference call when he dropped the news – The Avengers 2 is a go! He didn’t\wouldn’t\couldn’t confirm the release date, if Joss Whedon would helm it or if any of the cast will be returning. Just the fact that the onslaught of Marvel movie goodness was continuing with Iron Man 3 popping next year, possibly Thor 2 coming as well in 2013 (!) and Captain America 2 tentatively hitting in 2014.

The Avengers has racked up a serious amount of cash for the studio: $207.1 million opening weekend, $18 million just on the midnight premiere and globally has sucked in over $702 million. That kind of money is sure to turn any studio head into a true believer! Iger also let it be known that they were clearing room in some Disney parks to fit in Avenger themed attractions. Please oh please make a Black Widow ride!

Now we play the waiting game to see all the great details. If Disney can bring back all principals i.e. Whedon, Downey, Evans, Jackson, Johannson, Ruffalo etc and keep it as high quality as this one, we’ll have another stellar hit. Now if they can talk to Fox and Sony to bring some other characters to help out, that would make many a fanboy squee with giddy excitement!
