A Geeky Review- Tomb Raider

Every once in a while a game comes along that completely reaffirms my love of gaming. The recent reboot of Tomb Raider is one of those games. I had expected great things from Lara Croft‘s “rebirth” but what I got was quite a lot more awesome than I had planned. Tomb Raider is a near perfect game from start to finish and will leave you wanting more from our heroine, Lara, who finally got the game she deserves.

Through the years I’ve had a love/hate relationship with the Tomb Raider franchise. Being a female myself I was instantly smitten with the idea of controlling an intelligent female protagonist. Despite her extremely short-shorts and well endowed chest, Lara had credibility as a dual gun wielding action/adventurer who became an icon in the “boys club” of memorable video game characters. Unfortunately for Lara, she was always kind of one-dimensional and through the years lacked character development and was slowly forgotten as her male counterparts progressed and became multi-dimensional.

Best Of 2012 Pt 2 Portable Uncharted

Continuing on with my game of the year series, this week I look at a few of my favorites on a brand spanking new console, the Playstation Vita. It’s not much of a secret that when it comes to gaming I tend to lean-to the Sony side. So this past February I welcomed the Playstation Vita with open arms. The Vita has experienced mixed reactions from the gaming crowd and while there’s not been a slew of games releasing weekly for it, there are some gems amongst the slowly but surely building Vita library.

The Vita sports dual analog sticks so being a fan of shooters I was anxious to test it out. First up was Unit 13 a third person shooter that was mission based with the theory that it was easy by jumping in and out of the game since you were gaming on a portable system. It’s main downfall was that there was no multiplayer. Resistance Burning Skies, based on one of my favorite Sony series, was mediocre but still offered a very fun multiplayer experience on the go. Currently I’m playing Black Ops Declassified and it’s not as bad as some would have you believe. The campaign or lack of one is similar to Unit 13 and offers short missions instead of a story. The multiplayer portion is somewhat of an improvement and will be familiar to fans of the series. The biggest mistake Black Ops Declassified made was not including a zombie mode.

I’m A Gamer And A Girl

It’s kind of crazy the things you hear people say in online gaming. If I didn’t know better I would think most gamers are racist, homophobic or sexist, in reality I think the problem is immaturity. My actual name is Laddie and generally I use the name Laddie13 for online and gaming purposes. This is confusing due to the fact that I’m a girl. Once I’m found out I often get either guys hitting on me or insults because some guys think girls only play the Wii or casual games like FarmVille. The latter is usually due to the fact that I am playing better than they are. If I’m playing something like free for all with a random group I won’t even turn the mic on. You would think no one would even know I’m a girl but that’s not always the case because on several occasions I’m referred to as Lady13.

I like to say that I was born with a controller in my hand and since I started at a very young age it’s not that much of an exaggeration. I consider myself a hardcore gamer, the fact that I’m female shouldn’t be an issue but often it is. It’s not all bad though, I’ve received just as much if not more respect and admiration from guys that think there’s nothing cooler than a girl gamer. None of my female friends are gamers so I get it, gaming is a predominantly male past time. However when I go into GameStop to buy a FPS, please don’t insult me and ask if I’m picking it up for my boyfriend. Read more: I’m A Gamer And A Girl
