Samsung took a big hit today, owes Apple just under $1.05 billion in damages.

The Apple vs. Samsung trial has come to what many might consider shocking but maybe not a bit surprising. The jury deliberated for three days and came back with a mind bending damages total – just shy of $1.05 billion smackeroos. Samsung was on the beating side of the jury’s decisions, finding the company willfully infringed on five of seven patents plus the jury upheld the validity of said patents.

The other blow to Samsung was the jury’s decision that Samsung patents were not violated by either the iPhone 3G or 3GS, which meant Sammy was awarded zero dollars in damages. It wasn’t a slam-dunk for Apple as not all devices were found to be infringing nor did they get the $2.5 billion it was seeking in damages.

Cupertino shouldn’t count its money just yet as Samsung will surely appeal the case. It’s a possibility the damage amount could get lowered or certain parts of the decision reversed. Although Samsung shouldn’t hold its breath either, it could take quite a long time. Hit the break to check out the statements released by both companies in the wake of the verdict. Also, sound off geeks. How do you feel about the decision?

AT&T releases then sorta dereleases ICS update for Galaxy S II.

Been a bit of a fervor going on regarding the long awaited Ice Cream Sandwich update for AT&T’s Galaxy S II. Those of us who’ve been obsessively checking forums, blogs and Twitter thought the wait was finally over. The news hit hard and fast that Ma Bell had released the update for the masses. Pretty much instantly, geeks were either rejoicing or groaning. Why? Well because some were able to download ICS while others were denied faster than the chess club president asking the out prom queen.

There’s plenty of pics and vids floating over the net, showing the lucky geeks playing around but what about the rest of us? Oh just AT&T testing the update on the server before they “officially” release it to the masses. The full scale roll out is still scheduled but as usual the vague “soon” is the best we get.

Once ICS hits AT&T, this leaves only Sprint holding the bag to update their Epic 4G Touch. Which sucks for the folks on the Now Network, neither the carrier nor Sammy have let out any indication when they plan on pushing ICS out.  Keep hope alive though guys, maybe wishes will come true!

Geeky Gadget Review: Power2U Wall Outlet.

Let’s face it folks, USB charging for gadgets isn’t going anywhere. It’s a handy way to avoid numerous device specific chargers but we still need the charger for wall based power drinks. If you happen to own a few juice hungry devices, you still can end up with a clogged energy receptacle. We’ve seen a few different wall outlets that do away with the charger and instead allow users to plug the cable directly into the outlet. Newer Technology sent over their version, the Power2U for us to put through its paces.

The Power2U is set up to satisfy plenty of geeks out there with its feature set, ease of use and insanely easy installation. The P2U is a standard two 3-prong outlet with two additional USB slots on the side. The outlet is built with a “Smart Power” sensor that shuts off power to the USB ports when the cable is unplugged as well as delivering just the right amount of the juice needed. To combat the constant drain unused but still active ports steal, the P2U has ‘Safety Shutters’ that slide closed after the cable has been popped out. No electricity flows to the port if the shutter is closed. Take that hippies!

Installation is a breeze so don’t start freaking out, calling your electrician cousin who owes you a favor – if you’ve ever swapped out a dead outlet at home, you can do this. The guide included by Newer Tech is straightforward enough, covering all the basics that most of us should know. It took me less than the stated 20 minutes to pull my old plug-in out and slip the new P2U in. One note of warning geeks, due to the abilities of the P2U, it is bigger than your old outlet so pay attention to the electrical box you’re installing it in. As long as you have the clearance room and you connect the hot, neutral and ground wires, you have the battle won.

Thoughts after the break…

Rumor: Galaxy S III debuting in February?

That is of course the rumor we’re hearing. One year after Samsung unveiled the uber-awesome Galaxy S II, Sammy is expected to show off the next-gen device at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Rumored to pack a quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 12 mega pixel camera, Android 4.0, and a giant 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED screen, it would be a beast of a mobile sensation. Of course, every bit if this is a giant rumor cake covered with tasty tidbits.

One other rumor surfacing is that Sammy is floating the idea of adding some form of 3D to the phone. The company might want to set their device apart from the rest of the phones out there and if they pull it off, it might work. Or it might burn out spectacularly. Either way it should be a fun ride. And no, that’s not the phone. Merely a mock-up making its way around the web. Does look pretty though, doesn’t it? Unless you’re a barista.
