Revisit: Android 2.3.4 On Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G [VIDEO]

After the promising of an official Android Gingerbread update from Sprint that was promised by Sprint themselves on September 18th, 2011, and didn’t happen (and makes me feel like a tool for reporting a rumor that even infected Sprint’s customer service), I finally have gotten the truth from the source, Samsung Mobile, and the dudes at samfirmware.com. And it is that the last Froyo ROM update released over the air is the last that this phone will get. Officially.

The release on Sept. 18th turned out to be confusion across the board, as the new Samsung Galaxy S II is also nicknamed “Epic” on Sprint’s listings (why?  The original Epic was unique within the Galaxy S lineup as the only model with a physical keyboard, and the Galaxy S II is identical to other carrier’s phones in pretty much every way).  When I demanded to know when the update for the “Samsung Epic” was due out, there was no understanding that I was referring to the original Galaxy S and not the new phone which launched Sept. 16th. The initially produced batch was a mix between a prototype Gingerbread ROM and the official customized version, and the launch on the 18th was a patch for early produced Galaxy S II units who didn’t get patched in the factory. However, fellow Galaxy S Epic 4G owners, don’t panic, you can still update!  More after the break… Read more: Revisit: Android 2.3.4 On Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G [VIDEO]

Microsoft Hotmail Supporting Android and iOS5

With the Windows Phone still a short seller compared to Android devices and Apple‘s iPhones, Microsoft made the decision to step up service on their Windows Live Hotmail system and offering apps to both the Android Market and the iTunes Store.  This is rather late, but thankful for those of us who have been using other programs to sync with our Microsoft hosted email addresses, and the final apps are far better tuned than what was seen with the open market developers.  Expect a review of the Android app on my Galaxy S within the next few days.

Secondly, while Hotmail hasn’t seen much in the way of redesign, Microsoft has taken the time to put together tools many have been enjoying on Google Mail for quite some time, including “Unsubscribe” which extends spam blocking to the point where emails from particular addresses can be outright denied.  Sorting is cleaned up and easier to configure (imagine sorting a Windows Folder, same concept), and cleanup can be easily configured to keep your email account clean (unlike the 30,000 messages I have in my inbox).  It seems like not being top dog is pushing the software giant in the right direction! Hacker Hits Hundreds Of Gmail Accounts.

New day, different newsworthy hack. This time Google’s Gmail service was hacked by a Chinese hacker. The hacker used a phishing campaign to steal the user names and passwords of hundreds of accounts including government officials from the United Sates and South Korea. Also hit were were members of the Associated Press and Chinese activists as well as many more Gmail users. Google stresses this was not a security breach, it was a clear cut act of phishing.

Kudos to Google for catching this intrusion before it spread to the whole system. The fine folks at Google listed some helpful reminders to keep your accounts safe and secure over on the Google Blog. You owe it to yourself to refresh your memory and procedures with them. Some of the tips are no-brainers such as using a strong password that you use nowhere else, watching for irregular activity and never giving out out user name/password. They also point out to check your forwarding emails for unauthorized addresses.

GMail Adds Some New, Useful Features

Ever send an email to someone you didn’t mean to? Hopefully one of GMail‘s new features will keep that from happening. The first, of two, scans your most commonly emailed people and suggests them as contact recipients. The second feature checks to see if you have unwittingly added the wrong person, based on other recipients or your most contacted people. It then adds a little suggestion box using the classic Google “Did you mean:.”

You can be expecting these updates in the next couple days. Enjoy.
