Geek Blu Review: Spaceballs 25th Anniversary

Has it really been 25 years since Mel Brooks decided to spoof sci-fi movies (Star Wars in particular) with his most excellent Spaceballs? 25 years since the Schwartz, Yogurt, Lonestar, Barf and Pizza the Hut hit the silver screen? Well yeah it has but it certainly doesn’t feel like it. The movie had a couple different DVD releases, one being a feature packed and remastered two disc collector’s edition. That set at the time was considered “THE” version for fans to have. Now that we have the 25th Anniversary blu ray edition, does it hold muster?
My biggest fear for any catalog title that old being translated to high def is how “clean” they make it. If the team scrubs it too much, we see things that destroy the image. See The Wizard of Oz for a great example of that nightmare for fans or Jurassic Park. JP broke the movie illusion for me when the dinosaurs’ fake parts were too evident. The flip side is not cleaning it up enough, where the producers get accused of cashing in on nostalgia for a quick buck without doing much. The first copies of The Fifth Element come to mind here. Thankfully Spaceballs gets it just right. The image is crisp, clean and feels just like watching it on the silver screen many years ago. It’s a definite upgrade from the DVD, making it a worthwhile investment.

Jurassic Park will be rampaging in 3D in 2013

Perhaps after the surprising success of the 3D reboot of Starwars episode I: The Phantom Menace, Universal Studios have announced that Steven Spielberg’s dino-epic will be re-released in 3D. This re-release will come to theatres in the US on the 19th July. Many complained about the poor quality of the 3D in The Phantom Menace, but hopefully Spielberg will be directly involved the with re-boot. Producer Kathleen Kennedy said to a Collider journalist that both Spielberg and director of photography Janusz Kaminski will be analysing and evaluating the film frame by frame. Kennedy went on to stress the importance of having a cinematographer sit down with the director and why this duo could produce great results:
“I’m not a huge proponent of post-conversion, but I think if the film maker gets intricately involved in the post-conversion—it’s not just a technological exercise—then I think it can be really, really good and I think Jurassic Park is a perfect example of a movie that could work really, really well as a 3D picture”
Hopefully Jurassic Park 3D will break away from the recent string of terrible 3D films and actually become something very impressive. Will Spielberg go down a similar line to George Lucas and begin releasing a number of his films in 3D? Are you looking forward to 3D T-rex’s or is it just a shameless drive for money? Sound off in the comments!
