It’s been hinted at, it’s been speculated and it’s been whispered in hallways, the date when Microsoft officially and loudly opens up about the future, their new fangled Xbox Next, Xbox 720, Durango – whatever it’s called. Most of us hoped they might say something before E3, much like Sony did but the days drug on, getting closer to the annual event.

Today Microsoft caused fanboys to grease up their palms because they admitted that May 21st is the official unveiling, the coming out party for the next iteration of the Xbox gaming console. According to Major Nelson, the 21st is just the first step in the unwrapping, 19 days later at E3 they will showcase the system’s new games.

Interested geeks will be able to watch the live stream on Xbox.com, Xbox Live and on Spike TV (where else?) on May 21st. Kick off time is 1 p.m. EST so set your countdown timers now!

[New info] Updates are popping for Xbox 360 dashboard, nothing to see here!

Seems my intense need to have the My Xbox Live app on my Android was felt by Microsoft. They released it today in the Google Play store, yay!

Major Nelson sure loves his tweets, always giving the lowdown on all things Xbox and sometimes Microsoft. This time the Major took time to blurt out that the low-key Spring update was rolling on down the pipe for owners of the Halo home. Before you get all hot and bothered, only a few peeps are finding the pop-up to download the newest dash. Major says the rest of us plebeians should expect to see the download hitting our consoles next week.

The update is nothing special to speak of in terms of new freshness, instead we’re looking at future prep and under the hood tweaks. Most likely they’re working on getting the system ready for the recently announced features at E3, extra fun like SmartGlass and Xbox Music. I’d be interested in SmartGlass if MS would get off their rumps and open up the My Xbox app to Android. As of now, it’s available on iDevices and Windows Phone only.

Any geeks out there getting the update? Bum rush the comments!

Xbox Live new Dashboard details

So it was announced on the 22nd of November that the new Xbox Live Dashboard update will be coming to your system on December 6th. Yes that’s right December 6th and not November 25th . The announcement came from Microsoft’s Director of Programming Larry Hyrb, who you may know better as Major Nelson. The Major stated on his blog that the update would be an ongoing event with ”a wealth of new content” including “new, customized applications for television, movies, internet videos, sports and music”.

Another feature of the update is a complete design make over to the boxy design which is becoming more prevalent on Windows smart phones. Similarly Major Nelson listed a load of new, exciting features which will become available with the update :

  • New personal and social features including Cloud Storage for Game Saves and LIVE Profile
  • Beacons and Facebook Sharing
  • Enhanced Family Settings
  • Integrated voice and gesture controls across the dashboard and in apps
  • Bing voice search (Available this year in the US, UK and CA)

Xbox 360 Will Be Receiving Updated Disc Format

Xbox 360 users will be able to participate in a public preview of an updated disc format.

Director of Programming, Larry Hyrb, made the announcement this morning via his blog. ”This is an important update as we continually strive to improve our products and we could not do so without the help of our great Xbox community,” Hryb wrote. “As part of the preview program, you will receive a copy of Halo: Reach along with other possible rewards.” Halo: Reach, pretty cool right? Though I think it’s safe to say anyone who wants the game will have picked it up already..

Unfortunately the preview will only be available to U.S. Residents, due to the disc distribution. I wish I could tell you more about what the software update will do, though I can tell you that it is not an update to Blu-Ray discs. Head on over to the Xbox Live website to sign up, I just did.
