Review: The Avengers is the Earth’s Mightiest Comic Book Film

The Avengers is one of many things. It’s a secret S.H.I.E.L.D initiative but also Marvel’s latest, and perhaps greatest, film to date. This review is spoiler free!

The Avengers has been the culmination of six Marvel films where the back story and issues of the Avengers were explored. We all remember the likes of the first Iron Man, Thor and Captain America and perhaps try to forget the abysmal Hulk films. Which brings me onto my first thumbs up for The Avengers- it is the best Hulk film to date. The Hulk films were non nonsensical, boring and just an excuse for Hulk to smash but in The Avengers we become to value the man, rather than the monster. Mark Ruffalo does an excellent job of capturing Bruce Banner, presenting him as world-weary with a slight hint of craziness. But of course where would be the fun if Hulk wasn’t let loose and when Banner releases the beast within there are some truly jaw dropping moments, with equally awesome one liners (“The secret is I’m always angry”). Robert Downey Jr. also must be commended in capturing the arrogance and self-indulgence that Tony Stark is famed for. The two master assassins on the other hand, Black Widow and Hawkeye, felt spectacularly out-of-place save but the impressive action sequences where they do a good job of hiding this. As for Captain Steve Rogers, better known as Captain America, he is a man in a different world still carrying the traditions and attitudes that he had when frozen in ice. Although Cap reeks of self-righteousness initially you grow to respect him when he takes charge as Loki’s army arrives in force.  Which brings me onto perhaps the show stealer in terms of actors – Tom Hiddleston as Loki.  Hiddleston does a phenomenal job of portraying the God of Mischief as the power-hungry, ambitious and completely insane evil doer that he is. In The Avengers there is also a stronger sense of family connection between Thor and Loki that was somewhat lacking in Thor.
