Willow coming to Blu-ray March 2013!

willow

Finally, one of my favorite 80′s movies is coming to blu ray! Willow has just been announced by Fox\MGM for a blu-ray release in March of next year. I love Willow, it’s directed by Ron Howard, produced and pretty much written by George Lucas, there’s plenty of magic and feel-good moments and it stars a lean, mean Val Kilmer! The basic premise behind the movie is Willow, played by Warwick Davis, finds a baby girl abandoned. What he finds out about the girl is she is the one destined to finally bring an end to the vile reign of Queen Bavmorda, who no one likes. Thus begins Willow’s adventure to protect the girl and join forces with a crazy cast of unlikely heroes. Oh yeah and he has to try to overthrow the evil Queen, no biggie.

The blu ray release will be a remastered version of the classic film, overseen by LucasFilm itself. There will also be some new special features not seen on the DVD version such as a video diary by Warwick Davis and Ron Howard introduced deleted scenes. Willow will release for Blu-ray in a DVD combo pack on March  12, 2013. What an agonizing wait for a classic. They gave us Princess Bride and all was good, so now wait we will for Willow!

Say what? Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion?!?

It’s unbelievably true but the House of the Mouse is now more powerful than the Dark Lord of the Sith! In a surprising move, Disney has scooped up Lucasfilm for a massive $4.05 billion. For those counting along at home, that means Mickey Mouse is now (in a round about way) related to Wolverine and Luke Skywalker. Very, very interested to go to that Thanksgiving dinner. I mean who slices the turkey, Wolvie and his adamantium claws or Darth Vader and his lightsaber?

The other big news to come out of this it that Star Wars: Episode 7 will begin production and release sometime in 2015. No, they gave no details surrounding the plot or whether it will be any good or not – except it will not be helmed by George Lucas. I imagine that there will be a third trilogy of at least massive special effects and grand set pieces.  Interested in what flannel clad bearded maestro George Lucas has to say? Glad you asked:

For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.

So there you have it folks, a mega conglomerate of franchises. Maybe they can get a proper Indiana Jones flick going? Let’s see what the future holds. Hit the break and light up those comments geeks!

May The Angry Birds Be With You. [VIDEO]

This past weekend Rovio teased us with a glimpse of something that looked to be a Star Wars related Angry Bird. Today they announced Angry Birds Star Wars, a brand new addition to the game franchise featuring the birds as characters from the beloved masterpiece that is Star Wars. The pigs who recently got their own game, Bad Piggies, will be cast as Storm Troopers and Darth Vader. Angry Birds Star Wars arrives November 8 on most platforms including iOS and Android devices as well as PCs and Macs.

Rovio, which has partnered with LucasFilm on the game, will and make use of the epic Star Wars soundtrack as well as set the game in various locations from the sci-fi saga like Tatooine, Hoth and the Death Star.

“This is the best Angry Birds game we’ve ever done,” Peter Vesterbacka, CMO of Rovio Entertainment, said in a statement. “It’s the best parts of Angry Birds with all new cutting-edge gameplay set in a galaxy far, far away. As a big Star Wars fan myself, I’m really excited about this new universe. The Force is definitely strong with this one.”

This will play out in one of two ways, Angry Birds Star Wars will either be awesome and bring together two beloved geeky phenomenas or it will be so gimmicky that it will only further tarnish the Star Wars brand. As a lifelong Star Wars fan I will be powerless against it even though my Angry Birds addiction has been in a steady state of decline. I’m also for promoting and exposing younger geeks to the Star Wars universe by any means possible.
