Geeky Game Review: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

PlayStation-All-Stars-Cast

First off, PlayStation All-Stars is very different from Super Smash Bros. It may appear to be highly influenced by Smash Bros. at first, but just a little bit of playing will reveal that it is its own game. While some things can still be compared, there are some clear advantages and disadvantages in the game.

Looking at the characters, each and every one of them seems like they were pulled right from their last game and dropped into the same universe, which is what the developer, SuperBot Entertainment, was going for. There are currently 20 playable characters with future DLC promising to add more characters and other goodies. I was impressed that the characters were not just ones that are currently or recently popular. Characters like Sir Daniel and Nariko are not very well-known, but they are welcomed members of the game and play rather well. As for the characters from recently popular games, there is Kratos, Sackboy, Nathan Drake, and a good list of others. There have even been some third-party members that made people really happy, like Big Daddy and Dante. While the list isn’t perfect (where is Crash Bandicoot?), it is impressive and all of the characters are entertaining.

Commander Shepard, Where Have You Been All My Life?

Have you ever put off playing a game that seemingly every geek in the world is playing? For me that was Mass Effect. Recently I found myself in what I’ll call a gamer funk, nothing was keeping my attention and most of 2012′s releases I’ve bought had been a disappointment. I’ve done well to avoid spoilers so rest assured you’ll find no major ones here either. The controversy surrounding Mass Effect 3 really pushed me into getting started on the series.

I had played a bit of Mass Effect when I got a 360 but it had been a few years so I thought I would start once again from the beginning. I’m sure it was mostly due to impatience but I really struggled to feel a real connection with the first. I put in a good amount of time but in a move I already regret, I skipped ahead to Mass Effect 2. Instantly I fell in love with the game, one thing in particular was the much improved combat system. This was exactly the RPG/Shooter hybrid I needed to get me out of my gaming funk. Before I knew it any waking moment I could spare was spent with Commander Shepard and the rest of the Normandy crew. I played as a male Shepard in the soldier class. Given the choice I almost always choose a male character even though I myself am female. I also chose not to customize my Shepard, ok I’ll say it BioWare’s version of Shepard is pretty hot. Since we’re being honest, if it were an option, I’d never change Nathan Drake of Uncharted either.

This Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception gameplay footage looks hectic! [VIDEO]

After watching the latest gameplay footage for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, I needed a big glass of water! All that sand, all that dust just left me parched. I could feel Drake’s pain searching for a drop, just a hint of precious liquid. Then he has to fight his way through nasty goons, who have canteens of sweet water. They must die for this! Watching how fluid Nathan flips from firearms to melee has me more anxious than ever for the third outing for Drake. November 1st is just around the corner!

Sony celebrates the fans with their new “Long Live Play” video! [VIDEO]

Sometimes you just want to feel appreciated and that’s what Sony has done with this new video for their “Long Live Play” campaign. In it we see Nathan Drake, Solid Snake, Kratos, Cole McGrath and many more PlayStation heroes talking about how “He” made them the heroes they are. The extol his many virtues, his grace under fire, his ability to do anything. “He” is spoken of like a legend of olden times, a God among mere mortals. Then they speak his name – Micheal. Holding up a picture, we see Micheal is merely a PS3 playing deity brandishing the iconic Dualshock pad in his hands. As the scene plays, more pictures just like this are noticed on the walls. More Gods, more heroes.

Watching the video admittedly gave me a sense of pride for being a gamer. Sony is clearly trying to rebuild the trust they lost in recent months and what better way to do that then by worshiping those very people. Making us the heroes, the Gods, the celebrated. Good play Sony, good play indeed. Video after the jump.
