Psychonauts hitting PS3 as PS2 Classic. Commencing SQUEEEEing!

Psychonauts is getting a new release – as a PS2 Classic download on the PS3! That’s right, Double Fine’s most famous game (and most requested game sequel) will be hitting Sony’s monolith on August 28th. Before you shoot someone for PS cash, note this is not a HD remake and as far as I know, there will be no trophy support. It is however Psychonauts for anyone that hasn’t played it or want to replay and can’t thanks to the removal of backwards compatibility. We also haven’t heard the price but hopefully it won’t be more than $9.99.

The 28th is a great day for fans of PS2 treasures. Besides the awesome sauce that is Psychonauts, we also get the excellent Ratchet and Clank trilogy in a remastered HD collection! The good news is that release will have trophies and Up Your Arsenal’s multiplayer component will be up and running. Double nostalgia score!

Thanks to the tweet from Tim Schafer clueing us in and if you need more info you can hit up the PlayStation Blog. Just make sure you wipe away those tears of joy before you head out later! Think this might finally push through the sequel to Psychonauts? Fingers crossed geeks!

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is officially real! [VIDEO]

Looks like the internet rumor mill can chalk up one in the win column. Sony has pulled the curtain back on the very much speculated PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, revealing the game that was clouded in murky murkiness. Developed by SuperBot Entertainment, the game is of course a 4 player fighting game using classic characters from PlayStation’s storied history. The gameplay video dropped on the PlayStation Blog shows a fast and fluid fighter with frantic action.  The developers are working hard to give each character a healthy move set plus SUPER moves.

So what if it’s a PlayStation skinned version of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros? We’re talking laying the smack down with Kratos, Ratchet, PaRappa the Rapper, Sly Cooper and plenty more bad-ass fighters(Fat Princess?) from the past decade and a half. The backgrounds combine plenty of eye-candy from great games, usually in some crazy combo. We saw Little Big Planet meshed over Buzz TV, the Hydra from God of War, Patapons and more.

Plenty of Nintendo fanboys rave about the love fest that is Smash Bros. and it’s about time Sony fans had their own version. I know I’m excited, how about you geeks? Hit the break and check out the video clip showcasing the awesomeness! PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is scheduled to get more face time at E3 with a hoped release date of the end of 2012.

Quick Geek Update: PS Store Is Back!

Late in the evening of June 1st, a minor miracle occurred – Sony finally restored the PS Store to the awaiting masses. This includes access to all facets of the store including demos, avatars and add-ons. With the update comes a galaxy’s worth of content that PS3 users have missed out on over the last month. Add-ons for Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2, Fallout: New Vegas, new demos and even some price drops. PlayStation Plus members are looking at a massive amount of digital goodies to snap up, makes me almost wish I was one.

Full functionality seems to be spotty as some users, including myself, are getting a content error when searching through the store. Be patient as Sony is sure to be fixing this. The one noticeable absence is the Customer Appreciation goodies Sony promised back when the PSN was restored. Sony did state that they were in the final stages of testing and should be ready soon. There is another update scheduled for the Store and Plus members on Friday the 3rd so let’s hope it’s a good one. Now I’m off to my inFamous 2 beta for a few days. Hasta geeks!

PSN Outage Is Exactly What We Thought

Finally on Friday Sony explained, well sorta, what’s been going on the last week with the PlayStation Network. PSN users have been experiencing wide-spread sign-in failures for over a week now with no explanation from Sony. On Wednesday, visitors trying to log-in to the PlayStation website were greeted with a wonderful “Under Maintenance” notice, but nothing more. Rumors swirled around the Internet, “OMG H4ck3rs” mostly. And now we know, yep hackers.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, Patrick Seybold Senior Director of Corporate Communications and Social Media informed visitors that “an external intrusion” was the culprit behind the lackluster performance of PSN and Qriocity. Sony then decided on Wednesday to take the whole system down to test, verify and secure. Which begs the question, why did it take so long? This has been ongoing since the last attack by Anonymous with the more severe problems showing this past week. Why, why did Sony let it get so bad?
