Google Instant Comes to Android, iPhone

Google Instant

Google started offering Google Instant to some Android and iPhone devices on Thursday.  This follows on the heels of the announcement in September they would be providing this service.

Google Instant displays the results as a user types or keys in what they want to search for.  It makes it easier for the user to find searches of  broader category and then narrow down if they are unsure.

Currently the service will be in “beta” form.  Anyone with Android 2.2 or iOS 4 will see the option when they first do a google search.   It will allow the user to experience the same search qulaities as they would see on a computer.  The only downfall is that, while this is a great idea, the size limitations of the screen will make it hard to use.  The keyboard layout for all-touch phones is almost half the screen.  Then add the automatic word builder and now you have just a portion of the screen to actually use for searches.

Google Instant will work for any phone with 3G or a Wi-Fi connection.

Bing-Yahoo Team up to Take Down Google

Bing-YahooBing and Yahoo have teamed up to take down Google and the paid search results market.  According to SearchIgnite, the Bing-Yahoo team could “capture significant market share in the near term.”

Google’s third-quarter share of the pay-per-click search market stood at 80.2 percent.  That represented a 7.9 percent increase.  In the same quarter, Bing’s market share was 6.4 percent and represented a 21 percent increase.  Yahoo’s market share stood at 13.4 percent and decreased 10 percent from a year ago.

Bing and Yahoo recently began their transition in which Bing will power the Yahoo searches.  Early results have shown that advertisers are pleasantly surprised and are showing positive results.

Google stops the free GOOG-411 service

For all of you people out there that got comfortable not having to call 411 and using 1-800-GOOG-411 will have to get used to the $1.49-$1.99 charge from your carrier. Googles blog is saying that they will be pulling the product as of November 12th.

Why? Google is putting a lot behind the Google Voice features that are avaliable on Android and iPhone. Google’s blog has this to say.

Our success encouraged us to aim for more innovation. Thus, we’re putting all of our resources into speech-enabling the next generation of Google products and services across a multitude of languages.

It looks like the text based service will still live on however, sending that text to 466453 will enable you to pull limited information such as weather or phone numbers.

The real push out of this move is to get you to download the Google Voice Search application so get to downloading because in an era of smartphones who needs to call 411 anyways?
