Geeky Game Review: PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

PlayStation-All-Stars-Cast

First off, PlayStation All-Stars is very different from Super Smash Bros. It may appear to be highly influenced by Smash Bros. at first, but just a little bit of playing will reveal that it is its own game. While some things can still be compared, there are some clear advantages and disadvantages in the game.

Looking at the characters, each and every one of them seems like they were pulled right from their last game and dropped into the same universe, which is what the developer, SuperBot Entertainment, was going for. There are currently 20 playable characters with future DLC promising to add more characters and other goodies. I was impressed that the characters were not just ones that are currently or recently popular. Characters like Sir Daniel and Nariko are not very well-known, but they are welcomed members of the game and play rather well. As for the characters from recently popular games, there is Kratos, Sackboy, Nathan Drake, and a good list of others. There have even been some third-party members that made people really happy, like Big Daddy and Dante. While the list isn’t perfect (where is Crash Bandicoot?), it is impressive and all of the characters are entertaining.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is officially real! [VIDEO]

Looks like the internet rumor mill can chalk up one in the win column. Sony has pulled the curtain back on the very much speculated PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, revealing the game that was clouded in murky murkiness. Developed by SuperBot Entertainment, the game is of course a 4 player fighting game using classic characters from PlayStation’s storied history. The gameplay video dropped on the PlayStation Blog shows a fast and fluid fighter with frantic action.  The developers are working hard to give each character a healthy move set plus SUPER moves.

So what if it’s a PlayStation skinned version of Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros? We’re talking laying the smack down with Kratos, Ratchet, PaRappa the Rapper, Sly Cooper and plenty more bad-ass fighters(Fat Princess?) from the past decade and a half. The backgrounds combine plenty of eye-candy from great games, usually in some crazy combo. We saw Little Big Planet meshed over Buzz TV, the Hydra from God of War, Patapons and more.

Plenty of Nintendo fanboys rave about the love fest that is Smash Bros. and it’s about time Sony fans had their own version. I know I’m excited, how about you geeks? Hit the break and check out the video clip showcasing the awesomeness! PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is scheduled to get more face time at E3 with a hoped release date of the end of 2012.

Is the Ratchet & Clank HD Collection finally coming?

Could the greatest platforming franchise of the PlayStation 2 era be finally getting its own HD Collection? Can it be joining the like of God of War, Sly Cooper, Jak and Daxter, among others? According to a posting on Amazon France, the Ratchet and Clank HD Collection is ever so close to becoming a reality! Beyond a May 16th release date, no other details have been listed. No cover shot either, just some screen shots of the games.

I mean it when I say it was the greatest platforming franchise on the PS2. I spent more hours collecting bolts, upgrading weapons, earning skill points and tracking down those elusive Gold Bolts than I did sleeping. Each game in the series added something new and greater, compelling me and tons of gamers to anticipate what was next from Insomniac. The weapons, the humor, the spot on play – everything about the series screamed “Excellence!” Just like the recently released Jak and Daxter Collection, let’s hope Sony takes the original Ratchet and Clank, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal and puts them onto blu-ray in a remastered HD treasure trove of love!

If this ever gets confirmed and hopefully it does, we’ll make sure to let you O.G. geeks know!

Geek Review: Infamous 2

Ahh Infamous, one of a small handful of PS3-only franchises that makes me proud of owning the gigantic Sony system. I might be a bit of a Sucker Punch fanboy, I loved Sly Cooper and was slightly miffed when they announced their first PS3 game was not Sly 4. Once the teaser trailer for Infamous popped up on the net, I quickly changed my mind. Infamous was one of the better examples of a super-hero video game to come along. Was it without its problems? Of course not, no game is truly “perfect”.  With the release of Infamous 2, did Sucker Punch fix some of those nagging problems or is more of the same ole, same ole? A note of caution: there are a few Infamous spoilers ahead.
