A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

A Nightmare on Elm StreetFew movies have the ability to scare us, I mean truly scare us.  A lot of movies make us jump, but I cannot think of one that caused me to have periods of insomnia like A Nightmare on Elm Street did.  I mean a horror movie that the bad guy lived in the dream world?  There was no where to run to and I found myself fighting sleep.

The movie starts with Tina Gray (Amanda Wyss) having a dream that she is being chased from a unknown person through a boiler room.  The only thing that she can see is that the person stalking her has one hand that is normal and one hand that has five razor sharp claws on them.    She suddenly wakes up but finds that her nightgown has 4 cut marks………the same marks that she had in her dream.

As she goes to school she discovers that her friends also had similar dreams, all involving the man with the razor hands.  Tina’s friend, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), tells her that it will be okay.  However, Nancy and her boyfriend, Glen Lantz (Johnny Depp), decide to sleepover at Tina’s so that she will see that everything is going to be alright.  Tina’s boyfriend,  Rod Lane (Nick Corri), shows up and convinces Tina to have sex with him.  Afterwards the two fall asleep and Tina has another nightmare.  Rod wakes up to see Tina being gutted by and invisible knife and the drug up the wall and across the ceiling.  Rod flees and becomes the prime suspect in Tina’s murder.

Nancy then starts having more nightmares.  She survives them but realizes that she needs to talk to Rod, since he is the only person who knows what went on in that room.  She visits him in prison and he tells her everything.  Later that night, Nancy has a dream that the killer is in Rod’s cell.  She gets Glen to go with her to the jail and shows up just in time to see Rod being strangled with his own bedsheets.  Everyone thinks that Rod committed suicide due to his grief, but Nancy knows the truth and is determined to stop it.

Nancy’s mother finally comes clean with her daughter about what is happening.  It turns out that the killer is a man named Freddie Kruger (Robert Englund), a man who killed over 20 children over a decade ago.  He was released on a technicality due to an improper search warrant by the police.  Nancy’s parents and some other parents cornered Freddie in the boiler room of his apartment.  They proceeded to lock him in the boiler and kill him and then they all swore to never tell anyone.

Nancy convinces Glen to help her destroy Freddie Kruger.  However, Freddie kills Glen before he gets the chance to help.  It falls on Nancy to finish the job alone.

This movie has a lot of great action and subplots to it.  I highly recommend checking it out before the remake has an opportunity to get to theaters.

Overall this movie gets a 8.9 out of 10.
