We run down our top picks from E3 2012

And so, as quickly as it came, E3 2012 is over, leaving us in cloud of awesome (and some less-than-awesome) video game news. Although this year had some fairly dull announcements (i.e. Internet Explorer on Xbox 360) there was a lot of promising footage for a number of games which I have seen very little of. For instance Microsoft’s ace card was of course the return of Masterchief in Halo 4. However the presentation of Halo 4 was marginalized by a very extensive (and rather dull) demo of Smart Glass.

So onto our top picks. These are just our own preferences, based on our own personal feelings and inner gamer tickles. Hit the break to grab what we loved and make sure to give us some insight as to what grabbed you by the eyeballs!

Update: 2012- the year of the epic games

Update: Warner Bros. pushed Gotham City Imposters back to February, the only early January game on the list. Bummer!

So 2011 was a pretty good year for gaming, we had the likes of Skyrim, Modern Warfare 3, Uncharted 3 dominating the charts. But I think 2012 is going to equal it, if not better it, with it’s epic line up. So let’s look at the big releases of quarters 1 and 2 and see what 2012 has in store for all you gamers…

January

10th: Gotham City Imposters

31st: Final Fantasy XIII-2

31st: Neverdead- Remember that one? With the headless guy?

So what do we know about The Last of Us?

The Last of Us has taken the web by storm lately with its subtle hints dropped in Uncharted 3, the peculiar but pretty freaky ant video, the suggestive screen shots and now finally the release trailer dropping at the Spike VGAs. The game is being developed by Naughty Dog, developers of Uncharted, and it has been entirely under wraps until now.  Ergo sadly it will be a PS3 exclusive. So what do we know? Well we know that the Ellen Page lookalike is a girl called Ellie who we can presume has only ever known this leafy world of mutated zombies. Her companion and it would appear to be protector is Joel.  We also know that the trailer was created entirely only using the in-game engine, which is a pretty impressive feat because it looks stunning.

The big question is who are these zombie-mutants? Clearly humans but how did they become that way? You could draw links with the ant video and say it is due to some sort of fungus produced spores which take over the body, similar to the film The Happening. We don’t really see much of the mutant when it attacks Joel, especially after he blew its head off, but they clearly have a taste for human flesh, quickly going for the thug that fell foul of Joel.
