‘Thor Ragnarok’ Director Taika Waititi is being eyed for Star Wars
Thor Ragnarok’s director Taika Waititi has been mentioned by Lucasfilm’s executive producer Kathleen Kennedy as someone she wants for Star Wars.
“I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”
Other attempts by more comedic filmmakers
This would be amazing, but with Lucasfilm’s current track record with directors, I don’t know if this will work out. Earlier this year Lucasfilms fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller from Solo because of “creative differences”. The filmmakers behind The 21 Jump Street series and The Lego Movie apparently wanted more creative control.
“I think everybody went in with really good intentions and our approach to making the movie was different than theirs. That was a really big gap to bridge, and it proved to be too big.”
Waititi weighed in already
Waititi is also a very creative filmmaker and likes to have control over what he makes. He was lucky with Marvel that they allowed him to take the wheel with Thor: Ragnarok and run with it but would Lucasfilm? While both studios are under Disney, they do operate very differently. Waititi did mention Star Wars earlier this year.
“There’s not much room for someone like me.”
He went on to say
“I’m not an idiot. Who would actually say no to Star Wars?”
The director who is also known for Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows tends to move more toward comedy in his work and Star Wars seems to be moving more dramatic. The attempts at making more comedic movies, like in Solo have proved a not to get off the ground. So that begs to ask the question, with Kennedy stating she wants Waititi in the mix could mean they are trying to add more comedy to the Star Wars universe.
