My wife and I sat down for a late evening drink of Bourbon last night and we couldn’t find the right fit for a TV Show or movie to put on that felt right for the drink of choice. After several trailers (and a try at The Dukes of Hazzard) something came to her that she’d been meaning to tell me for about a week. She had heard of a new game show that SyFy was putting out into the world called Geeks Who Drink, and thought it would be a fun watch. She was not wrong.
Hosted by Zachary Levi (Chuck, Heroes Reborn), the game show features some of the best pub trivia I could think of. Two teams (each made up of two contestants from the audience) face off against each other in various categories of geeky trivia while being led by a celebrity team captain. The first two episodes of the show featured the likes of Eric Christian Olsen (Fired Up!, Beerfest, NCIS: Los Angeles) and Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Con Man). Up for grabs for the winning team is a dollar value toward the night’s bar tab and various geeky prizes (movie tickets, game consoles, computer accessories, etc). Like a true pub-trivia series, teams also use funny/punny geek team names (The Han Solo Cups and Slurenity to name some used so far).
Though I hadn’t even heard of this hilarious and geeky game show until already watching it with my own drink, Geeks Who Drink is already a must watch for me. It’s good fun to play along at home by yourself or with a watching/drinking buddy, the show has jokes aplenty from the host and team leaders, and it’s subject matter that just about any geek-girl or fan-boy would have a keen authority on.
The series’ third episode airs Thursday, July 30th, at 11/10central on Syfy and will feature John DiMaggio (Futurama, Adventure Time) and David Giuntoli (Grimm) as team captains, so be sure to tune in if you’ve the appropriate television package available! If you miss one, don’t worry! Past episodes are available here in full on Youtube for recapping!
