In development for quite a while, a film adaptation of New Mutants is finally happening. Based on the X-Men spin-off team from Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, the film is being directed and co-written by The Fault in Our Stars director, Josh Boone. We got our first official trailer and trust me when I say, its nothing you’d really expect. Take a look for yourself below.
Yes, we’re getting a straight up horror film set within the X-Men film universe. Color me intrigued.
This is quite ambitious for the franchise, branching out its usual style and norm of what we’ve come to expect with the X-Men. Now that would be all good by going into any different genre, but with horror for this part of the team unknown to most mainstream audiences, its a huge risk. I will say the trailer certainly worked its magic. Very atmospheric and sets the tone nicely. Also using the chorus from “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd. Yeah that will certainly make things creepy.
Boone has taken influence from the time when Bill Sienkiewicz was the artist on the book. Boone has described the film as “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”
Boone further added, “We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
From the first look of things he’s certainly living up to his word. The movie is currently in post production and set for a release date of April 13. Next year. Oh and what a happy coincidence, that happens to land on a Friday.
