It didn’t take long geeks, the dark side of Pokémon Go has already hit. The AR game has claimed victims in robberies specifically aimed at players.
Since Pokémon Go has been greenlit for players in O’Fallon, Missouri, roughly 8 or so Pokémon trainers have been robbed by real world criminals. It seems the would be masterminds used the game to mind read where someone would show up using the landmarks or PokeStops. Once the unwitting victim showed, the group of villains would then steal their belongings and their Pokedex.
The last hostility was sometime around 2 am local time on Sunday, when a BMW pulled up and a group of thugs redistributed the Pokémon Go player’s wealth. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for the O’Fallon Police to find them and toss them in jail.
These events highlight a growing concern among some people about the use of AR apps like Pokémon Go. People are reportedly using them while driving, while crossing the road, hell they’re going into childrens’ hospitals trying to catch them all.
If you plan on playing, good for you. It’s a good way to get out, exercise and socialize. While you exercise your body, exercise a little caution too. Don’t go into unfamiliar territory that you may get lost in, don’t dart in front of traffic, look up from in front of your phone often, in fact put the damn phone down once in a while.
Also, pay attention to your surroundings and the people in them. You may have wandered into an environment not suited for a geek. Due to the recent robberies, try to travel with friends. It’s far less likely that you’ll get robbed or worse if you’re with a fellowship of geeks hunting Pokémon. If you do go alone, take a noise maker like a whistle. Anything that will disorient a wanna be bad guy so they either disengage or you can sprint away. Too bad Pokeballs don’t work in real life.
