Well this is certainly a pretty big surprise.
Warner Bros. has announced a new DC Comics film that will set up a new banner of films that take place outside the established DC Extended Universe canon and feature whole new actors. Sounds intriguing. Where to start? Well giving the origin story of the Joker seems like a good place.
Yes, the most infamous Batman villain will get his own live action origin film with Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Due Date) will direct a script he’s co-writing with Scott Silver (8 Mile, The Fighter). The most interesting aspect however is the fact that Silver will co-produce the movie with Martin Scorsese. Nothing is being set as to where or when DC might want to release the movie.
As previously mentioned this would feature a new actor not already tied into the DCEU, so no Jared Leto will be found here. The script is currently being written and its been stated that this film intends to tell an origin story that isn’t already a part of previous iterations. The movie is also said to be taking a cue from Scorsese himself with films such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull acting as an influence for a more grounded and gritty hard-boiled crime film.
This is certainly outta nowhere news and one that will make plenty of people do a double take. DC already has a stacked line-up of films within the main DCEU itself, so taking on a line of movies not related to it is a bit of a risky move. Two different DC film worlds and of course the Arrowverse that’s already established on The CW, DC could be in over their head, but time will once again be the ultimate judge of that.
