Thanks to his works such as The Vision, The Omega Men, the current Batman book, and The Sheriff of Babylon, Tom King has quickly become one of the hottest names in comics. Well now he’s about to take on one of Jack Kirby’s creations from The New Gods as he teams up yet again with Sheriff artist Mitch Gerads for a 12-issue Mister Miracle comics debuting later this summer at DC Comics.
Mister Miracle, born Scott Free, was created by Kirby back in the 70s when he first joined DC and conceived of the New Gods and is pretty much the greatest escape artist in the world, a factor that will play heavily into King’s writing for the book, particularly the Jesus allegory assigned to the title character himself. A discovery King made when developing the book.
“When I first started doing this project, I started talking with creators like Mark Waid and one of the things I came across was people saying, you didn’t know Mister Miracle was Jack Kirby’s Jesus?” King said. “He’s Jesus as an escape artist. That’s utterly ridiculous, but the writer in you is like I get to play with Jesus as an escape artist.”
Of course with this being a book involving the New Gods, characters like Darkseid, Orion, and of course Miracle’s wife, Big Barda.
The escape concept of course is being played with in the book in terms of everyone in the world now seeking an escape from everyday life given the climate of the world right now. Gerads said of that, “I think Scott Free, in this book, really embodies what a lot of us, if not the vast majority of us, are feeling right now: being surrounded by a world that doesn’t make as much sense as it used to. I really sympathize with Scott, and as the book goes on you sympathize with him more.”
Speaking personally as a fan of the New Gods and in particular the characters of Mister Miracle and Big Barda, I am pumped to read this book when August comes around. It looks fantastic!
