Friday the 13th is the excuse for every horror buff to come out of hiding and wave their bloodied flag with pride. Whether it’s movies, comics, or games – there is always something to quench that thirst for a scary good time. As a huge gamer, I wanted to share some of my top picks for the next time you are looking for a spooky game to play the next time you’ve got the house to yourself. Here we go!

Outlast – PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

A survival horror game where the player steps into the shoes of a freelance journalist, Miles Upshur, that has the brilliant idea to waltz into an abandoned psychiatric hospital deep within the mountains of Colorado. It … is … TERRIFYING.

Condemned: Criminal Origins – Xbox 360, PC

This game is a psychological horror first-person that does things a little differently than others. The gameplay focuses heavily on melee and puzzles versus rambunctious shooting. The player becomes Ethan Thomas, an FBI crime scene agent, as he prowls the streets  of Metro searching for the man “Serial Killer X” that framed him for murder.

Silent Hill Homecoming – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC

Going back home has never been so scary. The story follows a Spec Ops man as he makes his way back home to find that everything has changed and the horrors of Silent Hill that tests the limits of sanity. It’s not the scariest in the series but it was amazing seeing Pyramid Head come back and the twists were amazing.

Until Dawn – PlayStation 4

Everything you would want to know about this title can be found at my full review here. It’s campy, it’s spooky, and it has got layer upon layer of conspiracy and traditional horror flick characters.

Alan Wake – Xbox One (Backwards Compatible), Xbox 360, PC

This action-adventure psychological thriller is as intense as it is unique. The story follows a writer that specializes in the thriller genre as he delves into a world between his own creation and reality in his efforts to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of his wife. His latest novel comes to life but here’s the kicker – he doesn’t remember writing it.

F.E.A.R – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC

[divider style=”normal” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
A survival horror-game as well as a First Person Shooter (FPS) that centers around a fictional Spec Ops Team – F.E.A.R (First Encounter Assault Recon) – as they uncover the supernatural mysteries around what appears to be a little girl. Filled with twists and jump scares, this game is a good title for those looking for their horror fix and their FPS fix.

Resident Evil 4 – GameCube, PlayStation 2, 3, and 4, Xbox 360 and One, PC, and Wii

[divider style=”normal” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
Easily my favourite Resident Evil game to date and one of the biggest reasons I continue to fire up my PlayStation 2. You play as Leon Kennedy, a special agent for the U.S. government, that is sent on a perilous to save the president’s daughter, Ashley Graham, who had been kidnapped by an evil cult. Monsters, Zombies, and oddly touching reunions: this game is a keeper.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent – PC

[divider style=”normal” top=”20″ bottom=”20″]
Probably one of the scariest games I have ever played. It is a first person game that integrates puzzles and enviromental interaction in order to progress in the story-line. Not only does the player have to progress through a terrifying atmosphere, but the “sanity” of the character is on the line as well. Play the wrong way, and Daniel’s mental health can take a dangerous turn.

Those are just a few of my favourite scary titles! Have you geeks played any of the ones above? Do you have and horror games that you feel should have topped the list? Let us know in the comments below!
