Voltron: Legendary Defender Season 2 Debut and More at NYCC

written by Jason Marcano October 7, 2016

As a huge fan of the first season of DreamWorks’ Voltron: Legendary Defender on Netflix I was thrilled to learn of season 2’s sooner than expected release.

The above tweet came as a surprise back in July as the first season premiered in June. Now, thanks to NYCC, we have a sneak peak of what to expect out of Voltron: Legendary Defender‘s second season. At the Con we also learned that “late 2016” really meant “early 2017” as season 2 will kick off January 20, 2017.

Those lucky enough to attend the DreamWorks Animation Panel at New York Comic-Con were granted a sneak-peak of an episode from season 2. The rest of us will just have to settle for this teaser trailer.

At the Voltron panel, after the screening of a season 2 episode, the show runners took to the stage to reveal what they have in store for the Voltron brand going forward. The panel consisted of producer Lauren Montgomery, Joaquim Dos Santos, writer Tim Hedrick, Jeremy Shada (Lance), and Bex Taylor-Klaus (Pidge). The five of them took turns revealing insights to the personalities of various characters, as well as some of the journey they’ll be taking in season 2. Through them we learned that:

Hunk is a good cook.

Pidge is a bit of a hoarder.

Keith is secretly happy deep down.

The biggest revelation, and the one to stir the crowd most was Lance being outed as Cuban.

The creators of Voltron promised that Lance’s heritage would be explored in the coming season. In fact, all the pilots will see substantial growth this season. Pidge’s mission to find her family will continue on, Keith will embark on an important journey with Shiro, and the other characters will all see their own arcs develop as the series goes on. According to Jeremy Shada, Lance will see “stuff” and “things” this season as he grows into the “heart of Voltron.”

News on the series is not the only thing in store for Voltron in 2017. Oddly enough, “Weird Al” Yankovic will be guest starring as a voice actor in episodes of the show. The icing on this sweet Voltron cake however has to be the new line of toys set to release in January from Playmates. Nerdist got an exclusive first look at the toy line.

According to the panel some of the toys will light up and have sound effects and voice. The basic line of toys will run you $9.99. This line includes the five lions, a combined Voltron, and a Robeast which stand at 5.5 inches tall.

There is a set in which you can disassemble and reassemble Voltron and those lions will run for $17.99. The exception to this price will be the Deluxe Edition of the Black Lion which comes in at $29,99. The lions will all have 18 points of articulation, and the black lion will also be equipped with over 50 sounds. Some of those sounds will only activate once Voltron is assembled. The Voltron in this collection will stand 16″ tall.

If you just want one giant Voltron toy, then you can shell out $39.99 for a 14″ tall Defender of the Universe. Playmates will also be releasing various masks and prop weapons from the series.

It’s a great time to be a Voltron fan geeks. How excited are you for the new season and line of toys set to drop in January? Tell us about it in the comments below.
