New DC Films President
In the seemingly never-ending turnover within the DCEU, Warner Bros. has tapped Walter Hamada to be the new head of DC Films. A quick IMDB search shows a fairly impressive list of (mostly) horror movies as an executive producer. The ones that stand out to me are The Conjuring (1 and 2), Annabelle, Annabelle Creation, and most recently It. All I know is the DCEU really needs a shot in the arm. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve honestly enjoyed the DC movies so far. Little things bothered the hell outta me, Doomsday was wrong all wrong, but for the most part, I was entertained.
DC’s biggest problem is their storytelling. Marvel took their time introducing characters, most with their own backstory movie, then brought them all together only after most of the main characters were all properly introduced. DC just said hey Superman had a backstory movie, screw it let’s throw him with an old ass Batman that hates him (old guys hate everything right?) and this lady with a cool light up rope thing. That’ll work, right? We still don’t really know what the hell happened to Robin. Turns out everyone liked how badass that lady was so now we’ll properly introduce her (Wonder Woman was awesome BTW). Ok, good enough, let’s add 3 more guys to this and call them the Justice League. But because we screwed the pooch on our storytelling we’ll leave out a very important member (sure the Corps was there, kinda, but where the hell was Hal Jordan). I mean c’mon are you kidding me? Oh and we still have Jared Leto as Joker. Am I the only one that thinks Jeffrey Dean Morgan could have made a pretty badass Joker?
While I think the hiring of Hamada should help, it’s really more like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. In order to build characters, DC Films should really put out two movies/year. The only DC movie we are gonna get this year is Aquaman. Don’t get me wrong I like this badass Aquaman, so does my wife but for different reasons, but we should see a Cyborg movie next. Why? Because he was in Justice League and he doesn’t have a backstory. What are we getting? Most likely Wonder Woman 2 and Shazam! and those aren’t slated until 2019. Do we get a sequel to Wonder Woman before getting another Superman movie? Are you freaking kidding me?
Will Hamada be able to right this ship? Let us know what you think in the comments.
