No, we are not sick of personal assistants just yet. AI development is still going strong, as illustrated by Samsung’s upcoming Bixby. Meanwhile, Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana, and Alexa are still expanding. Amazon has been especially aggressive with Alexa. They have now brought the voice of Amazon Echo behind enemy lines – to your Apple iPhone.
Amazon hasn’t launched a separate app for Alexa. Instead, she can be found in the Amazon app that many of you already have installed on your phone. Simply open the app, hit the microphone, and ask Alexa anything. She can do all the same things on your iPhone as on your Echo devices (get one now!). She can buy things, answer questions, and even control your smart home.
Despite this exciting development, Alexa will probably not be a total replacement for Siri. Siri is baked right into the OS. Therefore, she will very likely still be the go-to assistant for even the most loyal of Alexa loyalists. Also, if you already have an Echo device in your house, it should be easier to just talk to it, instead of having to unlock your iPhone, open the app, tap the microphone, and start talking.
Even with the worldwide market share dominance of Samsung (and Android by default), the iPhone is still the most popular smartphone device in the US. However, part of what makes iOS frustrating for 3rd parties is Apple’s firm control over every aspect. So, it can be difficult to roll out applications like artificial intelligence.
Alexa used to be restricted to the Amazon Echo speaker. Now, she lives on several other devices in the Echo line, the Huawei Mate 9 (buy it here!), and an ever-growing list of 3rd party applications and devices. In the battle to make our lives as convenient and connected as possible, Amazon is not giving up to Apple and Google.
