Ever since the 1940’s, superheroes have graced our television screens and theaters with TV shows and movies. Most of them have not been as good as those being made now, with a few exceptions. With the combination of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, the X-Men movies, the Avengers, and many other works the superhero genre has entered a renaissance. This is a great time to be a geek. Not only are some of the most famous and well known of heroes getting their time to shine, but so are many less known ones like Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy (That would make a great band name).
However, with all these heroes I think it is time movies take things in another direction and explore all the wonderful possibilities of supervillain movies. Our favorite heroes would be nothing without their enemies. The supervillain has been a staple of the genre from the start and still remains one of the most integral parts of it. The Dark Knight was one of the best superhero movies ever made, and much of what made it good were the incredible portrayals of the Joker and Two-Face. Without foes such as the Green Goblin, Venom, and Carnage we would have never seen how far Spiderman would have to push himself. Lex Luthor is the perfect counterpart to Superman, a corrupt human who envies his power to the point of obsession. Villains are the necessary evil which forces the heroes to fight. Without them, comics would never have been as interesting or cool.
So far, almost all superhero movies have been directly about the heroes. I’m not complaining, but I do think we are missing out on how great a story about the villains could be. If Doctor Doom ever joins the MCU, and I pray that he does, he deserves his own movie about his rise to power. A Loki movie would be stellar, especially since he is almost everyone’s favourite character in the Thor movies. A movie centering on the exploits of Deathstroke, Venom, Darkseid, or Sinestro could easily be hits.
The good news is, supervillain movies aren’t some far off dream. This summer, we will get to see Suicide Squad, the third movie in DC’s cinematic universe. For those who don’t know, the Suicide Squad is a team of villains forced to work for the government by microchip explosives inplanted in them. The movie will include Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Deadshot, Boomerang, El Diablo, Katana, Enchantress, and of course, the Joker.
If this movie succeeds, it could easily pave the way for more supervillain movies. Deadpool has already reopened the possibilities of having an R-rated comic book movie, and if Suicide Squad does well just think of all the evil that will be unleashed for our delight. Face it, we all love villains. Their hammy, quotable monologues,
belief knowledge that they are superior, and their urge to conquer the world are things we can all get behind.
