The MCU has been destroying fictional cities in superhero fights for a decade now. This is all about to change if recent Avengers 4 comments from Marvel head-honcho Kevin Feige are any hint.
Feige mentioned in a Vanity Fair article that Avengers 4 would “bring things you’ve never seen in superhero films: a finale.” Feige also said,“There will be two distinct periods. Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after.”
There is a long list of actors’ contracts that will expire by the Avengers 4 release: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner.
What It Means
Marvel is no stranger to rebooting their universe in the comics. Thor is a woman now, Spider-Man has a tan and Wolverine is old! Feige’s comments hold weight, as their parent company Disney has been involved in a rumored buyout with Fox for properties such as X-Men and Fantastic Four.
This could mean a complete MCU, as the company would have all their licenses back under one roof. The MCU is influenced by the Ultimate universe where stories are more grounded and modernized.
Ultimate Nick Fury’s look is based on Samuel L Jackson, who ended up playing the role later. There is also a mix of the main 616 Universe, like Spider-Man’s use of web shooters.
Outside the television realm, Marvel doesn’t do dark, which the Ultimate universe leans toward. For example, there are aspects like Tony Stark’s alcoholism, Ant-Man beating his wife and Hulk being a genuine monster that eats people.
Marvel is probably not giving up that PG-13 money anytime soon. However, if they continue taking elements from the comics, it would keep things fresh for these characters with new takes or actors.
Thanos decimating the universe could be the catalyst for a restart using the Infinity Stones. Marvel has decades of characters and stories to pull from, so it is anyone’s guess where they go next.
