Will we see Winds of Winter in 2017?

Yes! No! Definitely maybe! George R.R. Martin recently made some comments on the status of A Song of Fire and Ice: The Winds of Winter that would suggest we may be seeing the new book in the Game of Thrones series drop sometime in 2017. This all started when he was asked about the status of the book on his blog.

GRRM when asked for a status update on Winds of Winter:

“You really think statements like that would make a difference? Ah, you sweet summer child. I have years of experience with this that tells me otherwise. But okay, I will try it your way.”

“Not done yet, but I’ve made progress. But not as much as I hoped a year ago, when I thought to be done by now. I think it will be out this year.”

He then pulled a classic George R.R. Martin move by building up fans hopes, and then dashing them just enough to avoid disappointment:

“But hey, I thought the same thing last year.”

Martin has been repeatedly asked if he’s felt pressure to finish the book due to the fact that the show has caught up with the book series. He doesn’t seem too worried about the speed of the show though since the book still hasn’t been published, but he does feel the pressures of missing his deadlines.

“But the days and weeks flew by faster than the pile of pages grew, and (as I often do) I grew unhappy with some of the choices I’d made and began to revise…” he wrote last year. “[A]nd suddenly it was October, and then November… and as the suspicion grew that I would not make it after all, a gloom set in, and I found myself struggling even more. The fewer the days, the greater the stress, and the slower the pace of my writing became.”

What do you guys think? Will we see Winds of Winter this year? It will be interesting to see how Martin handles the show surpassing the books as far as the story within the novels goes. We’d love to hear your thoughts on the news, so join in on the conversation in the comments below!
