It’s been four months since the director of Paddington was tapped to direct the upcoming Willy Wonka movie. Paul King, is on the project along with Harry Potter producer David Heyman and screenwriter Simon Rich. That, however, is not what has the internet tongues wagging. A short list of the actors for title character was recently released and it surprised some people. The three contenders are Ezra Miller, Ryan Gosling and Donald Glover.
Gosling isn’t too surprising of a pick. He’s worked with W.B. on a ton of stuff before and they seem to like keeping him around. Crazy, Stupid Love, Blade Runner 2049, and Gangster Squad are all on the list of work he has done with the studio previously. Gosling is a good actor and the biopic he is in, First Man, about American astronaut Neil Armstrong, is the kind of movie that Oscar dreams are made of. Plus, since that is already in post production, he seems like he’d have the time if this stretches into a franchise.
Miller has been a busy man lately. He is already in the studio’s Harry Potter spinoff, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. On top of that, he is the Flash in the D.C.E.U. and has been in B.v.S and Justice League. There is also a stand alone Flash movie tentatively scheduled for a release in 2020. He’s another strong solid actor and as the movie is said to be looking at a younger Wonka, back before he became the famous chocolatier, he would seem to fit into that role without an issue.
Glover seems to be the odd ball in this line up. He is Lando in Solo: A Star Wars Story and is the voice of Simba in the upcoming Lion King remake. He appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming and was a regular on Community and 30 Rock. Glover has been getting rave reviews as Lando and his music career as Childish Gambino has been the focus of intense conversation with the release of his newest single, This is America. He isn’t a main part of any major franchises, which leaves him open to continuing on the project if it does well.
So, Who Will Be Willy Wonka?
My guess is going to be Glover. He is reported to be actively chasing the role for one. However, that’s not the only reason for my guess. Glover has comedy experience that the other two seem to lack. He was a writer for 30 Rock and has done his own stand up comedy shows. While that wont make him a perfect Wonka, that comedic timing was something that Wilder had perfect in his portrayal. No one can replace Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, but it should be interesting to see how one of these three men take the role and reshape it.
