Wonder Woman 2, the follow up to critically acclaimed Wonder Woman, is set to be released in November 2019. With production estimated to begin within the next few months, Gal Gadot is set to reprise her successful portrayal of the Amazon warrior princess once again. Patty Jenkins will of course be seated in the director’s chair after breaking the record for highest grossing film by a female director.
Speaking about Wonder Woman 2 at the Palm Springs Film Festival earlier this year, the director had this to say about the sequel:
We’re actually making a totally different film with a lot of the same, similar like things that we love, but it’s its own movie completely, so it’s not “two” to us. It’s an entirely new adventure together that we couldn’t be luckier (to do).
The director was also asked about the oversight of a Lynda Carter cameo in the first film and explained that a series of scheduling clashes led to the original Wonder Woman not appearing. However, she promised that something is in the works for the sequel without wanting to give out too many details.
Jenkins, along with Dave Callahan (The Expendables) and DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns, are currently working on a script. Other than that it will be set in the Cold War era of the 80’s, not much has been made public as to the plot. A working title, however, might have given us a hint as to the main villain. The first movie was originally listed as “Nightingale” while in pre-production, which turned out to have no visible tie-in to the plot or any of the characters within it. The sequel currently listed as “Magic Hour” seemingly hints at a foray into the mystical for DC, which could possibly be linked to Circe. This might not be too much of a stretch as Eva Green was reportedly approached to play Circe in the first film.
Circe is yet another villain borrowed from Greek mythology, following Ares as portrayed by David Thewlis (Harry Potter, Red 2) in the first film. She is a recurring villain in the comics, seeking to kill Princess Diana of Themyscira in order to fulfill a prophecy that will potentially make her even more powerful. She is an immortal and wields a variety of magical powers, from energy blasts to altering reality, but her go-to move is changing humans into animals.
Nonetheless, at this point, Circe being the antagonist to the amazing Amazon is pure speculation. Until we have any solid information, we can only guess as to where the plot will go. If this were to be true though, it would also sound trouble for the Man of Steel himself, as magic is his greatest weakness, second only to kryptonite. DC might be finally embracing its mystical side and unlocking an uncharted path for its cinematic universe.
