Either something screwy is going on at 20th Century Fox right now, or Deadpool snuck his way into their scheduling department and got ahold of a computer. Deadpool 2 was to be followed by Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix in the fall, but that won’t be the case anymore. Dark Phoenix has been delayed from its November 2, 2018, release to February 14, 2019, in time for Valentine’s Day. Nothing says romance like the world ending because of an unstable entity inhabiting a teenage mutant. That and the past Presidents’ Day weekend successes of Deadpool and Black Panther. With a free spot open, Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody will take over the original release date, no doubt in a prime award season spot.
Another film moved back (again) is New Mutants. New Mutants was originally set to come out next month but then was pushed back to February 22, 2019. Now, it will be coming out in theaters even later, on August 2, 2019.
Many have thought about the future of the Fox franchises ever since the deal with Disney went through, and so far, it’s confusing. Deadpool 2 seems to be the most stable film in place right now; ironic given who its main character is. There is still no word at all as to what the state of the Gambit movie is, and these delays aren’t helping. Some are speculating that New Mutants is being pushed back further to help launch Disney’s future streaming service, which just so happens to be scheduled for 2019.
The state of the X-Men films had always been all over the place ever since The Last Stand but has recovered with gems such as First Class, the previously mentioned Deadpool, and of course, Logan.
So whatever the case for the delays, let’s just hope for some good movies.
