Fox’s X-Men universe is a unique one in the world of movies. They have given us a trilogy, a series of prequels, some spin-offs, and a weird timeline-blurring combination of all those elements. Talk about unconventional storytelling.
The series of films began in 2000 with the logically titled X-Men. Over the years, the studio proceeded to give us a total of a whopping 9 movies, plus Logan coming soon. They aren’t done yet, either. Several more films are in various stages of development now. Meanwhile, the next flagship movie has yet to renew Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Nicholas Hoult. Add in the success of Deadpool in its separate timeline, and the departure of Hugh Jackman from the franchise. This leads us to wonder, “Is it time to start over from scratch?”
I would argue that we may have seen enough of this interpretation of the X-Men. After 16 years of movies, and two distinct casts portraying the same characters on screen, Fox may need something fresh to reinvigorate the audience’s interest. Apocalypse was a moderate success, but received very mixed reviews. Meanwhile, Deadpool obliterated expectations and is a great foundation for a series of movies based on his timeline. That would be a great alternative to rehashing the “Dark Phoenix” story, as we reported.
Gambit, The New Mutants, Deapool 2, and X-Force could easily fit into a fresh universe. As much as audiences and critics alike love the dream team of actors that Fox has assembled thus far, they would be wise to reboot now before the franchise gets stale and over-saturated.
What do you geeks think? Is it time for Fox to start over from scratch? Do you want to see another round of movies with Lawrence, McAvoy, and Fassbender? Also, how much more Deadpool can you handle? Let us know!
