A long time ago in a neighborhood far, far away, while in high school, I hosted a sleepover for some friends of mine and one girl brought the Spaceballs DVD. For most of us, it was our first viewing and we all loved it. Quotes and references soon made their way into our everyday talks. Now, X many years later (you don’t really need to know how many, right?), Rick Moranis is reprising his role as Dark Helmet.
According to USA Today, the May 9, 2018, episode of The Goldbergs (a show which takes place in the ’80s) will feature a voice appearance by Moranis. In the episode, Adam Goldberg decides to begin a Mel Brooks fan appreciation club after watching Spaceballs. Goldberg is then visited by Dark Helmet in a dream and Goldberg promises to get a sequel to Spaceballs made.

Moranis, famous for films like Ghostbusters and Honey! I Shrunk the Kids, has mostly been retired since 1997. Adam Goldberg, the show’s creator, is a fan of Moranis and Mel Brooks. In a statement, Goldberg said,
I truly think Rick Moranis gave the most underrated and brilliant comedic performance in any ‘80s movie as Dark Helmet…I’ve been a lifelong fan of his work and became obsessed with having him reprise the role on my show. As an added bonus, maybe this even gets Spaceballs back in the conversation, and I can get my dream of helping make a sequel!
I don’t think I’m alone in agreeing with Goldberg that a sequel to the 1987 film would also be a dream come true for me. I don’t usually watch The Goldbergs, but I will definitely be tuning in to this episode, which according to Adam Goldberg’s Twitter, is “his favorite episode of the entire series”.
What do you think? Are you excited to see Moranis wielding the Schwartz again? Tell us in the comments!
