With production on Aqauman in motion, they have finally found the fiendish foe for Jason Momoa’s titular hero.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II from Netflix’s The Get Down has been cast as Black Manta, the biggest villain of Aquaman’s Rogue Gallery.
Abdul-Mateen beat out Trevante Rhodes from Moonlight and 24: Legacy lead actor Corey Hawkins on a short list of choices.
Black Manta debuted back in September 1967 in Aquaman #35 and has been a thorn in the King of Atlantis’ side ever since. Only known as David, Black Manta has a high suit that allows him to breathe underwater, emit an optical blast, and has various weapons built into it. All that is in addition to be a brilliant tactician, skilled fighter, and quick learner of new technology.
Since his debut, Black Manta has become THE Aquaman villain and has been prominent in several DC Comics adaptations including The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure, Justice League/Justice League Unlimited, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and Young Justice.
Abdul-Mateen will be joining the previously mentioned Momoa, Amber Heard as Mera, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko. James Wan will direct.
