Recently I came across a video, featuring Doug Jones. It set me to thinking about how much I love movie monsters and strange creatures. I will neither confirm nor deny my addiction to shows about special effects and make-up effects. When I can’t sleep, I hit up YouTube…what do you want from me?
It’s just a fact my top two favorite Guermollo del Toro movies, The Shape of Water and Pan’s Labyrinth wouldn’t exist without Doug Jones. He’s responsible for more than a few unexpected laughs and for some of the creatures still appearing in my recurring nightmares. Even without dialogue, Jones brings creatures to life in ways that never fail to connect with an audience.
But for some reason, I never realize just how many times Doug Jones is “the guy” behind the mask:
Doug Jones has over 150 acting credits to his name (or face) but he isn’t likely to be recognized outside genre fans. His prolific career relies heavily on his ability to bring strange and macabre creatures to life.
Jones carved out a unique niche for himself in Hollywood. Due to his willingness to be unrecognizable, stories otherwise practically impossible to make stand as some of the genre’s best.
His entire career prompts the question, do you prefer your monsters to be VFX or real people in costume and make-up?
If you had to pick one, which character/creature played by Doug Jones is your favorite?
It isn’t unheard of for me to stop watching a movie because the look and feel of the monsters didn’t match the live action set-up. The real surprise would be if I said it was Doug Jones inside the monster.
Don’t see your favorite Jones character? Do you have different “monster” actor that comes to mind? Hit us up in the comments and let us know!
