Razer looked to create a new niche in the smartphone market with the Razer Phone. Nubia doesn’t want Razer to have that whole cake, they want a piece too. The Red Magic phone will look to do two things. Capitalize on the gaming smartphone market and do so while remaining inexpensive. There’s one catch though. If you happen to live in North America, you currently won’t be able to get one. Don’t worry, I’ll list all the places the Red Magic currently ships to a bit later in this article. Oh, one other thing, it is currently on Indigogo and is set to start shipping in July.
Specs and Details
The specs might not super impress on paper, but if they put them into practice well, it might not matter.
- Snapdragon 835
- 8GB RAM
- 128GB Storage
- USB C Charging
- 3800mAh Battery
There are a few things to get excited about that aren’t listed up there. They are including a feature Nubia is calling Gameboost. With the flip of a switch on the side of the phone, Gameboost will stop just about all other processes to make your gameplay experience that much smoother. Theoretically, this will help to extend your battery also.
I’m not sure how this is a feature, but this phone will have a 3.5mm headphone jack. I haven’t seen any real mention of speaker placement, it would be nice if they were front facing though. There is mention of DTS audio and an integrated DAC so hopefully the audio game is on point.
The rear camera is a 24MP with a f/1.7 aperture. The front shooter is 8MP with a f/2.0 aperture. Smaller smartphone companies seem to upgrade camera software as time goes on. If the camera isn’t great at first, hopefully a little patience will help. ‘Essential’ seems to have been really good at this.
The display is said to be a 6-inch 1080p display with an 84.86% screen to body ratio. For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S9+ is 84.2%. The lack of bezels on this phone should be fairly impressive.
There are a couple other really cool features. If you notice on the back of the phone there is a little light strip. Yes, that is actually real and there is an RGB light strip on the back of the phone. Sticking with the back, it has a convex style to it to help dissipate heat. As every gamer knows, heat is the enemy of a smooth gaming experience. Nubia knows this and included 3 vents to help.
I told you I would get back to this. You can currently back this for $399, and you will get a dbrand skin. Earlier I said you couldn’t get this phone in North America, well they have since added an ‘early tester’ option. If you would like this phone you might want to hurry though. At the time of this writing, there were only 7 left for North American backers. Outside of that, this is where Nubia will ship the Red Magic to:
- European Union
- United Kingdom
- Hong Kong
- South Korea
- United Arab Emirates
Will you get the Red Magic? It’s hard to pass up for $400. Let us know in the comments what you think!
