Yup, you heard it! Alfred is finally getting his own live-action TV-series! Epix will create Pennyworth; straight-to-series, with a total of 10 episodes to begin with! Even though the show will be managed by Bruno Heller, (Gotham’s showrunner) it will not be linked to the Gotham series in any way.
Michael Wright, EPIX President, said:
As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make EPIX the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny; along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Bret Paul and the team at Warner Horizon, on this fantastic origin story.
The show will be a completely new story, in which we will be able to explore Alfred’s backstory. The truth is, we actually don’t know a lot about Batman’s trusted companion. This is our chance to see Mr. Pennyworth’s life, before meeting the Wayne family! It will (hopefully) answer our questions on where he came from, how he gathered all these skills he has (no butler has this insane set of skills like Alfred), and how he met the Wayne family.
What we know so far is that Alfred was in the British military (SAS), though his role in it was never truly defined. It’s been said that he has worked as a medic, or in intelligence, or even as a Royal Marine. In the end, however, he created a secret company and eventually went to work for Thomas Wayne (Bruce Wayne’s father) in 1960s London.
The TV series production is going to begin later on this year, and the premiere will be aired sometime during 2019. Pennyworth will be based on characters from the DC universe, written by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Casting for the TV series hasn’t started yet, but one thing’s for sure: the cast will be entirely different from any other Batman-related movie or series.
