Rumors Abound About Upcoming “Joker” Movie

written by Liz June 24, 2018

With the working title of ‘Romeo’, Todd Phillips’ upcoming ‘Joker’  film is gearing up to begin shooting in September. This new movie appears to be outside of the running D.E.C.U. and the rumors seem to place it outside of the well known Joker canon.

Phillips will be producing the film along with the legendary Martin Scorsese. They will be working with cinematographer Lawrence Sher and production designer Mark Friedberg. Outside of the production crew the only person confirmed in the film is Joaquin Phoenix.  Joaquin Phoenix will be playing the Joker in this origin story. He had been cagey in interviews when asked about the part and the casting was only recently confirmed.

This movie is not going to be under the standard D.E.C.U. label but D.C. Black or D.C. Dark, which makes many believe that it will be a much more adult themed movie. Given the complaints of D.C. movies being ‘too dark’ or ‘too gritty’ it seems like there may be a coming divergence between the standard D.E.C.U. and what will come under one of these new headings. This also might mean that it will be possible to have 2 Joker’s running around, Phoenix’s Joker and Leto’s Joker.

Along with the news about the start of filing, there has been an alleged leak about who some of the characters are going to be appearing alongside the burgeoning Clown Prince of Crime. The news comes from ThatHashtageShow.com, which is not the most reliable source of information, so take this with whatever grain of salt you will.

Supporting Female (60-74) Caucasian. Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself. But recently her health has started failing, and she’s nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home. She’s obsessed with her former employer and can’t believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this…

Speculation is leaning toward this being the Joker’s mother. Is she going to die, leaving Joker as a dark mirror of Batman? Is Bruce Wayne her former employer, and does she pass on the obsession to her son? Is she a former employee of Bruce’s father, and when he died she got the boot? Will her earlier struggles with mental illness be something we see in Phoenix’s character? That is nothing but speculation on my part, but it would be an interesting way to tie everything together.

Sophie Dumond

Supporting female (27-34) to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She’s just trying to catch a break..

Whether this is going to be a love interest, a partner in crime, both or a nurse at the mental hospital, nothing is really sure. She has a young daughter who will be making a small appearance in the film. The first thing I thought of when I heard there was a daughter involved, a 4 year old daughter, was a moment in Injustice: Gods Among Us: Year Two #13.

Joker, Harley Quinn talking about her daughter

Is it possible, sure, but it would take some serious mental gymnastics to get here.

Supporting Male (40-59)Caucasian. Thinks he’s the wisest and most knowledgeable person in any room he’s in, tries to present himself as a mentor to everybody, but is really just looking out for himself, burly.

Supporting Male (30-49) any ethnicity to play a dwarf; Randall’s best friend, he’s good-natured and a buddy to his colleagues at work, one of the only decent people in the whole movie.

It is guessed that these two work together. Whether they work at a mental hospital, a talk show, a hotel or a bank (all sets being worked on for the film) or some place yet unknown is up for debate. Are these going to be Jokers friends before he becomes the Joker, trying to keep him from going down the wrong path.

Hoyt Vaughn

Supporting Male (50-69) any ethnicity the old-school manager of hotel staff. He’s seen it all, and finds it difficult to give a shit about much of anything anymore

Detective Garrity

Supporting Male (50-59) any ethnicity. Police Detective in a city on the brink; a by-the-book cop, worn down by all his years on the force. He doesn’t care about or take into consideration any of the societal or political ramifications of his cases.

Detective Burke

Supporting Male (30-39) any ethnicity. A Police Detective and Garrity’s partner; he’s an asshole, who gets off by being in a position of authority. Being a cop is how he defines himself.

Given that Gotham is a city about to fall apart, it is not surprising that we have two detectives in this. I am curious to see how the cops are going to be portrayed in this. It is interesting to note that the two women are said to be in/from the Lower East Side. I don’t know if that is a common reference in Batman comics, but it is a well known reference to New York City. Is this going to be set in the ‘real world’ and if it is how close to reality are the portrayals of the detectives going to be? How political is this going to be getting.

Murray Franklin

Male (65-75) Caucasian

There is nothing else known about this character, just a name and an age. It’s rumored that this is going to be a large secondary character. Plus, with Scorsese on as producer there is speculation that the team is angling for Robert Di Niro for this character.

I’m a little annoyed that the women are immediately described by whether or not they are good looking. It’s a common annoyance. The rest look like a semi-reasonable cast for an origin story. Some friends to betray, some cops to sneak behind. I am definitely curious to see where this goes.

What do you think about what has been released and speculated about so far? Do you have an ideas about what might be coming in this new movie? Tell us in the comments!
