Amazon Exec Hints at Future of ‘The Dark Tower’ Series!

Some of you may remember a 2017 movie called The Dark Tower, which was based on the book series by Sai Stephen King of the same name. It’s okay if you don’t; not many were happy with the adaptation. There is good news though: there could still be a TV series adapted by Amazon!

Amazon first announced that it was looking into turning the eight-book story into a series a few months ago, but not much has been said since – until now. In a recent interview with Deadline, Amazon Studios Head Jennifer Salke spoke of upcoming projects, including an adaptation of The Dark Tower. When asked about the project, Salke said:

Those are scripts that I haven’t gotten yet. I’ll be seeing those, that material, in the coming weeks. None of those things are dead. They’re very much alive.

Okay, so this is not a major announcement, but it is exciting to know that a better version of the books could happen! There are so many things mentioned in the series that I would love to see on the screen!

What’s ‘The Dark Tower’ About?

If you haven’t read it yet, The Dark Tower books were inspired by the Robert Browning poem “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came”. The main character, Roland, is a gunslinger in a world that has “moved on”, which means that although it has similarities to our world, it is not the same. The series follows Roland as he picks up companions to form what is called a ka-tet and is on his quest to (you guessed it) The Dark Tower.

So What Was Wrong With the Movie?

To be honest, I could not finish it. At the time of my viewing, I had recently started a ka-tet of my own full of fellow King readers. We were all working our way through The Gunslinger when I decided to try and watch the film. Big mistake. As I was watching the film, all I can now remember is feeling confused because what I was watching was nothing like what I had been reading. Even Sai King admitted that the film had some challenges, though he did give credit to the screenwriter. So rather than forcing myself to finish, I quit the film and stuck to the books. I am halfway through book six now, so please, no spoilers!

So Why Would a Series Be Better?

In my humble opinion, most book series just translate better to TV series rather than movie adaptations. For one, there is more time, so that the storylines can be developed and looked at in detail rather than crunched or cut to fit into a movie timeframe. The Dark Tower series is so weird and unusual yet works and flows so well that I truly hope this upcoming adaptation will do it a justice that the film did not.

By the way, Jennifer Salke, if you need help looking at the scripts, I can totally help you out!

Are you hoping the series is better than the film? What would you like to see that the film neglected? Tell us your thoughts in the comments!
