La la la la la. Did you smile in excitement? Did you keep singing the theme song? That song can only mean one thing: Daria Morgendorffer is coming back.
Daria originally aired between 1997 and 2002 and focused on Daria Morgendorffer and her best friend Jane Lane, as they navigated their way through high school. Viewers had originally met the sarcastic teenager on Beavis and Butthead, but her wit was so biting and clever that she earned her own show.
Normally I am not one for remakes or reboots. Part of the charm of a series can be the setting, especially the time, in which it originally takes place. So will this still work? Is she still relevant? I think so. Her humor was sarcastic, her tone honest. These qualities do not go out of style.
But there is some bad news: the reboot is tentatively named Daria and Jodie. That’s right. So far there is no mention of Daria’s gal pal Jane being involved. Deadline posted a summary of the upcoming show:
The iconic animated franchise is reinvented through the eyes of heroine Daria Morgendorffer and one of her closest friends Jodie Landon. These two smart young women take on the world, with their signature satirical voice while deconstructing popular culture, social classes, gender and race.”
For me, this raises more questions than answers. What happened to Jane? In what time will this take place? Will I get to see my crush Trent?! (Yes, I know he’s a cartoon; don’t judge me.) Regardless of the presence of the Lane siblings, I will watch anyway. I was very much like Daria in high school; she is my spirit animal. And her return makes me happy.
What do you think? Are you willing to give this reboot a chance? Tell us in the comments!
