It was announced the Morbius film from Director, Daniel Espinosa has tapped Jared Leto to play the ‘Living Vampire, Morbius.’ With producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach at the production helm. The film is being written by the writers for Netflix’s Lost in Space, Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama and Palak Patel will oversee the picture.
Sony has not given a date for the film, but they are expected to begin production sometime this year. With Venom on the rise for Halloween releases, one could assume that Morbius too will be a Halloween released film.
The Origin of the ‘Living Vampire Morbius’
Morbius was created in 1971 by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane. His debut in Amazing Spider-Man # 101 was very surprising. During the time of the Comics Code Authority, it was very controversial.
The reasoning for making him a scientific accident, who was deemed the Living Vampire is pure brilliance. In a time where comics were not allowed to depict vampires in any manner. Michael Morbius was made to have a lab accident.
A man trying to cure himself of a fatal blood disease, which was plaguing his home country, led to him becoming a monster with vampiric traits such as fangs, pale skin, and the need for human plasma.
Morbius was resurrected in a 1992 series of his own. The run had 32 issues and ran until 1995. It depicted Morbius trying to become a hero, fight his thirst, and even on occasion, the monster teamed with Spider-Man and Blade.
Television and Media
Morbius appeared during the 1990’s Spider-Man The Animated series. The lab competition of Peter Parker, who finds a vial of Peter’s blood and uses it for his own experiments. He is turned into a vampire when attacked by a bat inflicted with the light of the Neogenic Recombinator.
Spider-Man battles this foe as well as he can. Eventually having his own blood drained and having to team with Blade to take down the threat. He eventually retreats to a cave after being hit by the beam once more. His plan being, trying to turn his love, Felicia Hardy, into a creature like himself.
He is found in a cave and resurfaces after a failed attempt to cure him. Kingpin attempts to capture the vampire and instead sets him free on the city. Black Cat goes to Whistler and Blade for help and this leads to a team-up of Spidey with Black Cat, Blade, and Morbius to take on Blade’s mother when she discovers she can create vampires like Morbius.
What do you think about this news. Is Leto the right pick? Has Sony begun starting a Halloween release trend? Are you looking forward to The Living Vampire?
