Bran Stark and the Three-Eyed Raven in HBO's Game of Thrones

We are in the midst of a Game of Thrones desert. The eighth and final season of the series won’t air until 2019. While everyone is busy thirsting for new episodes, HBO has an announcement that’s sure to increase the anticipation. According to a report, HBO has officially greenlit a pilot for an entirely new Game of Thrones series! This time, it’s a prequel.

What We Know So Far About the ‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel

There have been rumors about Game of Thrones follow-ups and spin-offs for the past few years. Producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have already announced their next projects. No one knew exactly which direction the Game of Thrones universe would take after the conclusion of the series. Now, we have some answers.

Originally, there was speculation that the next series or movie would be a prequel. That has been confirmed. However, it was rumored that any prequel series would be focused on Robert’s Rebellion and young Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. This is not the case though.

Instead, the untitled new series will take place in Westeros thousands of years before Robert’s Rebellion, in an age George R.R. Martin has called the “Age of Heroes”. According to HBO’s official description:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.

Jane Goldman, whose credits include X-Men: First Class,Kick-Ass, and Kingsman, will write the pilot. George R.R. Martin will work closely with her for the series. Much like the original Game of Thrones, the new series will span multiple locations and factions. Maybe we’ll see legendary figures such as Bran the Builder, the ancestor of House Stark. We could even see the Long Night!

Are you excited for this prequel to Game of Thrones? What do you hope to see in the new series? Sound off in the comments!
