Tacos, aliens, robots, a society ruled by The Almighty Tallest, and a waffle baking minion; sounds like a (bad) list of random objects, doesn’t it? But bring them together with a hilariously dark storyline, and you get the cult classic animated series, Invader Zim.
Though it ran for but a short time on Nickelodeon, Invader Zim captured the love of geeks and nerds everywhere. For years we’ve pined for a reboot of Jhonen Vasquez’s amazing animated series, to no avail. Until now that is. It has officially been announced that Invader Zim will be returning to the air in a brand new animated movie on Nickelodeon! It’s exciting news, to be sure, worth breaking in to song over.
I’m gonna sing the Doom Song now! Doom doom doom doooom!

Originally broadcasting 2001-2004, Invader Zim has been off the air for over a decade, to our despair and horror.
Zim was a quirky, sarcastic character one couldn’t help but love. Along with his absolutely adorable minion Gir (who will explode without tacos), Zim sets out with one goal- to lead the invasion of Earth and the conquering of puny humans.
For those unfamiliar with the series, here is a compact synopsis of the original plot from the Google overview:
Zim dreams of greatness. Unfortunately, though, he’s hopelessly inept as a space invader. Desperate to be rid of the annoying Zim, his planet’s leaders send him on a mission to infiltrate Earth, providing him with leftover, cobbled-together equipment. To their consternation, Zim succeeds in setting up a base on Earth and infiltrating human culture, posing as a human child as he plots the planet’s downfall. Only Zim’s archnemesis, Dib, recognizes that Zim is an alien, and of course, nobody believes Dib’s claims.
With the resurrection of Invader Zim, one can’t help but wonder if other of Vasquez’s creations will come to life, such as Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Squee! While admittedly much darker works than the aforementioned show, both are still hilarious, dark comedies in their own right. Not to mention, with movies like Deadpool becoming box office successes, it couldn’t be a better time for them.
