As the successor to Star Wars: Rebels (which was, itself, the successor to The Clone Wars), Resistance will focus on the events just before the sequel trilogy. According to the press release, the series will tell the story of Kazuda Xiono, a “young pilot recruited by the Resistance and tasked with a top-secret mission to spy on the growing threat of the First Order”. It will take place before The Force Awakens and will include both new and familiar characters. Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) and Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma) will reprise their roles.
Resistance will be produced and written by pretty much the same team as Clone Wars and Rebels. Dave Filoni will once again be at the helm. This time, however, the aesthetic will be dramatically different. The new series’ animation will be anime-style. Filoni mentioned how his affection for World War II aircraft and fighter pilots was the core idea behind this new show:
My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
A Chance to Explore the Sequel-Era of ‘Star Wars’
The Clone Wars filled in the gaps between Episode II and III. Rebels showed the formation of the Rebellion. Needless to say, Resistance could prove to be immensely interesting.
This would be a chance to tell the story of the early Resistance. The Resistance is essentially Leia’s private military. No one ever discusses this in the films, yet it’s a totally fascinating idea. Fans would love to see how the Resistance was born and watch it develop into what we finally saw in The Force Awakens.
It would also be interesting to learn more about certain sequel-era characters. There have been some great supplemental materials about both Poe and Phasma, but this new series could be a good opportunity as well. Maybe Phasma will be the main “bad guy” of this series. Maybe Poe will be Kazuda’s mentor. There’s a lot of potential here.
