Peter Capaldi’s stint as the Twelfth Doctor recently wrapped up in the 10th season of Doctor Who and the BBC have already announced who we can expect to see in the TARDIS next and that would be Jodie Whittaker.
Yes, many had hoped it would happen and it has, a woman will finally be playing The Doctor. Fans had been wanting to see a change like this for years and good things come to those who wait.
Whittaker is best known for her roles in Broadchurch and the Black Mirror episode, “The Entire History of You”. She’s also had additional roles in Attack the Block and has performed on stage.
Whittaker’s casting is a very huge deal for the sci-fi series in changing up the usual model of protagonists. Fans had wondered if this was possible when long longtime enemy The Master had regenerated into a woman named Missy, played by Michelle Gomez.
The casting really signifies the changing of the old guard as its not just the traditional casting that’s gone out the window and the departing Capaldi, but with Steven Moffat leaving as well. Moffat had been showrunner since season five and the beginning of Matt Smith’s time in the role. He will be replaced by Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall.
The Thirteenth Doctor will make her debut in this year’s Christmas special, The Doctors.
