More Than Meets the Eye? ‘Bumblebee’ Could Change Everything

Bumblebee from Paramount Pictures

I was completely burnt out on Transformers. Then, Paramount and Hasbro changed the game. Earlier this week, the teaser trailer for the upcoming Bumblebee spin-off premiered. And now, somehow, I find myself excited for Transformers again. Just take a look:

‘Bumblebee’ Could Be a Different Kind of ‘Transformers’ Movie

Bumblebee could change everything. In 2007, the first movie was fun because it was ridiculous and novel. It had its problems, including typical Michael Bay tropes. We expected that, though. It was almost a parody of those other ridiculous, explosion-filled Michael Bay movies. Now, 11 years later, it’s tough to tell if the next four movies were all parodies of themselves or simply replicated the same formula over and over.

Bumblebee, on the other hand, seems different. First of all, judging solely by the trailer, it doesn’t even look like a Michael Bay film. That’s probably because it’s not. Travis Knight (Kubo and the Two Strings) is directing this one. It’s clear already that he’s not trying to imitate Bay’s style. So, at least, we can expect Bumblebee to look different than the previous five. Speaking of which, Bumblebee himself looks different. From 2007 until The Last Knight, he was a Chevy Camaro. Now, in keeping with his original animated form, he’s a Volkswagen Beetle! Fans everywhere rejoice!

It’s worth noting that this film takes place in the 1980s and serves as a prequel to the first film. The trailer hints at some 80s nostalgia (including playing that dreaded song) without making it feel too gimmicky or obvious. Honestly, the trailer even made me feel nostalgic for the original (and the late Bernie Mac).

Finally, Bumblebee will focus on Bee and the bond he forms with Hailee Steinfeld’s character. Hopefully the director can maintain this focus. The other films were overflowing with explosions and CGI action. If Knight can avoid this trap, this Transformers movie could be something refreshing. At this point in the game, based on this trailer, I’m extremely optimistic.

Are you a big Transformers fan? Are you excited for this next installment? Sound off in the comments!
